"GHOST" My '71 half hatch
« on: July 01, 2013, 11:40:02 AM »
I finally bit the bullet & bought the '71 half hatch I've always wanted. Finding one close to home was proving impossible after 4 years & the cost of a nice "Cali" car exceeded my means so I bought a project from another member. I decided to call her Ghost because I've never seen one in person until this one & I have to bring it back from the dead. Seems fitting  ;)  All I need to do now is find time to go & get her so I can get started.

It needs some assembly to get it roadworthy but it's pretty much complete. I plan to drive it daily until a time when I can afford a more in-depth restoration though I don't plan to go nuts on it. Just a good R&R that wont take her out of service longer than a few winter months.

The only rust through on the car is this lower quarter. Luckily I already have a clean lower quarter & drop down to replace the bad area.

It's a 2.0L/4-speed car with a nice black interior. 1 minor crack in the dash pad & the lower seat cushion on the drivers side is worn but other than that nothing needs replaced. I can't wait to start driving this car.

The hatch has only minor surface rust on the lip & the window seal is still soft & pliable. All the rubber is in excellent condition since this car was garaged for years away from the elements.

Looks like you did just fine for yourself, there!  Shouldn't be too much involved in getting her back on the road and you'll be driving a truly rare car!  Enjoy!

Dwayne :)

I figured I'd have a hatch off one some day but I was thrilled to lay my hands on the whole car. It nearly ended up being parted out. I'm glad I went for it & I'll probably die with this one still in my garage  :P

I looked it over pretty good. Everything is there & just needs assembly plus I have my '73 to rob for parts I may be missing. It comes with a 4-speed & I have another so one should be good. The only unknown is the engine. It comes with one that probably runs & I have one that may run. If both 2.0's are bad then I'm screwed. I have 2 complete gasket sets, NOS fuel pump, water pump, carburetor, motor/trans. mounts & a brand new Joe Hunt magneto for a 2.0 so I'm covered on everything short of having 2 junk long blocks.

BTW, anyone ever run a magneto in a driver before? I got it for my buggy which is where my 2.0 was destined but it would be kinda cool running it in my driver. Even with no battery & a junk alternator I could drive the car home.

Looks like a cool project, you can run a mag  but since you have to run solid core wires may have an issue with the radio, other than that it'll work just fine..

Crap! I forgot about the RFI from a mag. I have a killer stereo waiting for this car so scratch that idea.

That's actually a small window hatch out back. It's like the Holy Grail of early Pintos. What I really would like to find is the thin chrome molding that goes around the tail lights & across the hatch. I'm not in love with the monster bumper guards but I hope they will grow on me. I'm also in the hunt for '76 chrome headlight rings, extensions & hood chrome. Usually I like removing chrome & trim but for some crazy reason this car screams "ADD CHROME" when I look at it.

Cool, let me know if you happen to have it. I never saw a half hatch in person before this one, only pics. The 1st surprise I got was the scissors hatch prop in lieu of gas shocks. I had no idea it came that way.  Let me know when you are gonna be in the vicinity so we can hook up.

Definitely interested. PM sent

A facebook friend gave me the idea for the extra chrome. I love it on my '76 wagon but hadn't considered how good it looks on a thin bumper car, especially a dark colored one. I'm leaning black....

Yep, but no biggie. I'll keep an eye out or maybe hit Fred up for the ends. I'm nowhere near ready to install any of those parts at this point.

One brake caliper & the new heater core arrived today. Still waiting on the other caliper & brake hoses. Also found an NOS master cylinder & it's on the way. I was right about early wheel cylinders being different & boy are they expensive. I guess I'll run the originals & not worry unless they start leaking.

I started whipping my car trailer into shape so I can go fetch my new car but I may just rent a tow dolly & grab it in a couple weeks.

Some more new parts arrived. Now I need to go get the car.

I'm getting some work done on my trailer between rain showers. Too bad I can't fit it in the garage.

After 25 years my deck boards were shot.

The fenders rusted out years ago but I bought new ones that I'm finally gonna install.

I also had 2 rotted crossmembers even though the rest of them are in great shape.

Hopefully I'll have it roadworthy in a couple weeks.

I've been busy finding parts & getting ready to bring the car home. Work picked up & brought work on my car trailer to a standstill so no clue when I'm gonna make this happen. I can't wait too much longer because I need the car running & driving by the end of September.

I found an NOS pair of Moog ES417R tie rod ends for $47 shipped. There are cheaper ones out there but I've NEVER had a Moog part fail in 30 years so I'll pay extra to get them if I find them. I already have new K8212 upper ball joints but the 71-73 only lowers are pricey so I'm gonna wait a bit to get them.

I found a set of NOS D1FZ-13200-A &  B front marker lenses for $36 shipped. I don't even know if I need them but that was too cheap to pass up.

I couldn't pass up an early NOS armrest for $15 even though it's ginger & I need black but vinyl dye is cheap & I've never seen black ones pop up, NOS or used.

K8169 UCA bushings are still available new & cheap as are the K8196 strut rod bushings. I can't find a part number for early LCA bushings by Moog but there are others available when I'm ready to R&R the front suspension.

I have my wheels. I picked up these 13x6 last week in northern Michigan. They aren't perfect but I'd give them a 9 out of 10. The 205-60 tires are all like new.

Today I picked up this pair of 13x7's near my house with what looks like new 215-60 BFG tires that are date coded 1997.

That should give me the old school look I'm after. I love the deep dish rears.

The chrome on these rears is maybe a 7 1/2 & 2 of the fronts are close to a 9. The other 2 are 7 1/2 also. I've got $340 wrapped up in all 6 with near new rubber so no complaints. If it was gonna be a show car I'd spring for re-chroming but for a driver they will be perfect.

I have a pair of 195/60/13 & a pair of 235/50/13 BFG's from the 80's with the older block letters I'd love to run but they have a little dryrot in the treads. It's a shame because they have maybe 2000 miles on the set. They are on a set of Appliance 4 spokes that could use re-chroming.
