Title: So The Pinto Bug Strikes Again!
Post by: Glitch666 on October 17, 2011, 10:43:43 PM
So I just snatched up this 76 Sedan for $750. It was sitting in a lot for a couple years, I finally badgered the guy to sell it to me. It has a freshly rebuilt engine (well before it was parked and I have records of everything). The 4 speed in it went out and the guy installed a t5 and new clutch, but he said the tranny was making a high pitch noise so he parked it. He did tell me he put gear oil in it, although I thought t5s took atf??? Anyways heres pics of the new car, and some updated ones of my 74!

Yes the T-5 needs ATF....If the tranny is not bad it looks like you stolen that car.....$750 and from what I can see it looks like a good car.....

Oh yeah, I think it was a steal to, all it really needs is a whindsheild and interior work, the engine is freshly rebuilt from what he said and what ive seen, im just amazed at the condition of the body. Even if the tranny is bad, I have a brand new donor 4 speed sitting in my shed ready to be put in untill the 5 speed is rebuilt.

Well, I finnaly made it over the mountain pass to Yakima to take a look at the car and see if i could get it home. Turns out it wasnt a t5 he installed it was a 4 speed out of a mustang. The guy didnt realize that on the front of the trans is a cover that covers part of the shaft(its about a 1/4 inch longer on the mustang tranny) and was preventing the clutch from working and also making the loudest whine ive heard any car make. So we switched the cover from the old trans and put it back together. That worked great although I believe that trans is on its last legs as it really sounded like it was gonna explode on the way home 160 miles back over the pass. Made it home safe though. Also theres a pretty load tap coming from the top end some where, a lifter maybe? I do have the receipt from Yakima grind for the the head being re done right before the car was parked in 09. Its a pretty bad tap, any ideas of what it might be? I mean the car did sit for 3 years so maybe some of the oil passages are clogged up? Not sure but ill get back to you guys with more info. :)

You might want to pull the lifters and clean them up or change them out....Check with Esslinger for a good valve lifter tool...

So on Friday I went to a wrecking yard about 50 miles away, picked up a perfect windshield for my 76 out of a junked out 72. Got it for 65 bucks. Also snatched up the mint 72 gauge cluster(literally 100% perfect).
