A bit more info....

The car was originally a States car. It was built with a BOSS 302 & 4 speed.
A guy up here bought it for the engine alone, for his BOSS Mustang, that had no engine.
The guy I bought it from bought the car. He put an engine together for it. Just a 302W though. Put a T-5 behind it.
Doesn't have headers, just the cast factory type manifolds.

This car is 99.999 % rust free ! Only place I found any was on the bottom outside of the right door.

The guy had a boo boo at the track. He had the hood up cooling the engine. Time to run again he set the hood down & got distracted & forgot to lock it down.
3/4 the way down the 1/8th mile it flew iup and busted the widshield ( a glass shop found him a new one !) & cracked up the scoop. Some small (easy fix kinds) dents & bent the hindges a bit.
Found some small paint chips. No big deal. For now I'll just touch up to make sure rust doesn't start.
Told me he never ran the 1/4 mile. Just 1/8th & said it turns 7;80s. So no idea what it will do in a 1/4.

There are a few things I'll change over time....
Not much though ? It has had all rubber , ball joints etc replaced. Doors are tight as the day it came out of the factory. Everything is tight. Not one sign of past rust on the car, other than that one door, mentioned.
I'm really pumped ! I cannot build one to this level (in Canada) for what I paid. I don't even think I could build it for three times the price !

Sweet lookin ride...it should be a blast. I don't remember my 1/8 mile times but 1/4 mile with mine was low 12's. You should do that easy and maybe high 11's. Have fun !!!

At 7.80's in the eighth, it should turn mid to low 12's in the quarter.  Great car!

The car was advertised a couple weeks ? You from the area ?

I checked it out some more. Changed oil & filter, plugs & more. Then loaded it up (I live about 6 miles from pavement). Had it out for 2.5 - 3 hours.
Carb needs work, it is too rich.
After driving for that time I have a list of changes needed.

Now I know what you folks were talking about when people look, give thumbs up & the big grins others have !
Gas stn had people come over & chat. Stop lights people hang out the window with big grins and thumbs up.

It has been since the 70s since driving a Pinto : too long ! This car is so much fun !  ;D

Wish I had seen it then ! Engine is gone now.
As soon as my bank account gets over its terror of being robbed, I'll be looking for another BOSS (or just get a new style from Ford Racing).

edit due to duh moment

No idea how I had forgotten this car !
I've saved a ton of car pictures and it just got lost in the shuffle, I guess ?

A dual quad Boss 302!! that is pretty sick!!..I'll bet that intake manifold is worth a small fortune.
She ought to run real good!!

It's a 70s Drag Pack engine . Getting it from the fan to trans tail end. Including the oil cooler.
Trans is a B/W T-10 with Hurst shifter.
Going to be a fun car to drive !

I'll be making a bunch of changes. After the engine gets here in Sept or Oct I'll then start the search for new tires & rims. Quick measurement , looks like I can go 19" - 20" wide on the rear & still be under the car.
Plus a bunch of other changes.....

Leave yourself room for the tire to go up on the quarter panel side when hitting bumps. To keep it low & not hit the quarters usually means tucking the tires 3 or 4 inches behind the wheel lip or jacking the rear sky high so tires dont rub.

Just one quick measurement one day & it is about 19" - 20" from the inside of the tub to the inside of the lip.
I'll have time this winter to get it all figured out.

Dropped the B2 in today. The carbs in the picture are backwards. Even less room when installed the right way (for SBFs with this intake).

Rockers were changed out because the comp cam (stainless) ones had 1.68 ratio.
Blue ones are 1.73.

Engine is getting closer to dyno time. The pan with the "hump" in it was no good for this. The rods were touching the hump. He put another pan on for the dyno run.

If it doesn't work on the B2 I'll use it on the next build with the 302w.

The 2 intakes in front are the E-BOSS on the left & OEM on the right.

I'll quote what builder had to say...plus video link.

quote:
345 Cu. In. pump gas 240 .590 cam Engine. I feel that the most important Dyno numbers are the BMEP,It tells you how efficent the engines is.Reeves ran in the 170s.Modern CHI/ AirFlow Research
head type engines run in those numbers.Very Happy.Mini Plenuim made peak Tq.@5500 423.H.P.@
6500 478 The Stock Intake really runs well.Tq.@4800 403.H.P.@6700 465  E-BOSS Tq@5100 416.
H.P.@6500 473  The E-Boss runs Very close to the Mini Plenuim, and has the best average..The OEM
intake really holds its own,and was the only one that liked to rev.to 7000RPMS and only lost 13HP
to the mini and held its Tq up to the E-Boss!! All Manifolds lost Tq,and gained NO H.P. with 1inch open spacers.E-Boss intake fit best on the engine with the OEM style Felpro1248 gasket. Checkout the videos..Hope this info helps..

FYI..... the engine didn't have a windage tray when on the dyno. With the new Milodon pan & windage tray it will bump the HP up to 483.
If for some reason I want even more, I can change up from the 750 DP to an 850 DP and get over 500 HP out of this build.
The 750 will have better street manners though.

Head scratching on how/what to do about the alt.
I have the short water pump (gives me another inch & a half clearance). But no parts are made to move the alt back, on a BOSS 302.

Engine sitting on the floor was driving me nuts. So I made a spreader bar & put the engine sort of in. You can see I changed the oil pan. This means it will need changes. I do not have the new Quick Time bell here yet. So I do not know if I'll raise the engine an inch & a quarter - or lower the rack. I'll decide when I get the bell. Pan is a half inch off the rack in this position.

You have the scoop, looking at the photo I would
mod the frame mount to use the engine mount in the photo.
That is if the QT bell gives you enough clearance to the trans
tunnel and doesnt make the engine/trans angle to bad.

Will the v/cs clear the hood ok?
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on July 02, 2012, 10:45:00 AM
Lots of clearance under the hood.

I will raise the motor (and trans) if needed. I'd rather not lower the rack.
May mean I'll need to mod the fire wall more than was done before. No big deal.

Those frame mounts are made in such a way they can be flipped. 4 bolts in each one & welded down front & back. Easy to do.

The QT bell I'll be using has tons of clearance as well. I tried to put the stock bell that was on the 302w. Wouldn't fit, due to the ribs it has.
No ribs on the QT:  http://www.summitracing.com/parts/QTI-RM-6063/

That 1/4" flat bar has been in a parts bin since the 70s ? It was a mirror extension for Ford pick ups !
I'll pick up a new belt this week end & test to see if it pulls the pulley out of line. If so, I have a plan on how to fix it.

Done. I'll likely change the alt to a one wire though. Trying to decide on painting the pump, or leave as is. Picked up all new bolts for the pump today. All taken off, till the engine is in for the last time.

You'll see that lots of detail work needs to be done in the engine compartment. After the headers are built, it will get done.

Due to the new Milodon pan I had to raise the engine. I was going to cut the frame mounts off & re-locate them. Made spacers instead. Let me know your thoughts ?

Holley throttle plate & Lokar cable.
Not too fussy on the size of the plate. May one day change it.

T-10 problem. The pilot shaft is just barely in the bearing. Had plans to re-build the tran anyway. Needs to be (about) 1/2" longer.

When I got the car it had a 302w in it. Drove it maybe 100 miles (at most) to see how it handled etc. All I wanted to know is what I'd change when I put a BOSS 302 in it.
Due to many cost over runs it will not be back on the road this year.
It will be next spring though.

Instead of 2 individual spacers,I would
do a 1 piece that would lay on the mount
and  the engine would bolt to it.

Small world !
Was at work & the co. I work for hired a new welder. Turns out he worked at a place that built all types of race cars.
I asked if he built headers & yup !
Best deal, he actually lives about 20 minutes from me !
As soon as I get my T-10 issue sorted out, the car will be going to his place.
He will be building my wheely bars as well !

NOS, never used. All parts are there. They are no longer made.
Kit is for 289w , 302w and 351w.

That makes two sets of headers of this kind I now have. No other parts came with this set.

Nope. Good deal.

I called the guy that is going to build my B2 headers. Asked if he was to copy the set of black headers, how much. He said about $1500.00.
So when this is taken into account, I got a smoke'n deal @ $700.00 + shipping, for the whole kit.

Sometime next summer I'll be on the look out for a 71......or a newer version like a 74 ^ for a light weight build.

Had a couple days off so started on fitting the shifter.
It is a shifter by Long Shifters. In line.
I still have some trimming to do. Ran out of time.

Note how it is line with a persons right shoulder.
Also note the rust where a persons feet sit. It is light though. I'll clean this up & use POR 15 to make nice. Will also use a new style sound deadner , that I've sen people on this forum use. The "fuzzy" stuff (factory) will get tossed.

Built (finally) motor mounts.
Plates are about 5 1/2" wide.
Angle iron will be welded to the frame rails after the pinion angle is checked/adjusted at the trans mount.
Pads are two firm ones & are 1/2" thick, on each side.
The motor pedestal bolts are 7/16" & was wondering if there is any reason they cannot be drilled out & tapped for 1/2" bolts.
To me, that is the weak point.
There will be a safety cable from the front of the engine to the frame, left side.
There are 10s of thousands of ways to make motor mounts. Thought this easy & simple way was the way to go for my application.
Plates off the engine are 3/8" thick. Angle iron is 2" & 1/4" thick. 1/2" bolts.
I'll use blue lock tight when the final installation is done. All bolts are grade 8.

Part of the reason was to make the header build a bit more simple. There will be little movement of the engine, so clearance for this will not be much of an issue. If you see flaws or weak points, let me know your thoughts.

I still have grinding / trim work to do later. I have a small sand blaster to clean up the parts before painting.

I'm not too sure horizontal mounts on a flat plane are gonna handle the stress.

That was a question in my head as well. I was thinking a flat 1/4" bar welded onto the left plate up to a header bolt may tie it in better ? To a head bolt would be better, depending on where the header tube will be ?

Reeves, I don't have a real good picture of my set up but I'll post what I have. The mid plate is at most 1/8 , so motor ahead 1/8 or tranny back 1/8 not to big of a deal for the added support it gives. Bud

Will not be using a back plate. I have a couple ideas to make the ones I made work OK. I hope....

Got the shifter figured out & adjusted on the Super T-10. Ended up with extra rods & a few other parts. Had to use the shifter arm (trans) for reverse from a Hurst shifter set up. The handle for the Long Shifter is small & I have big hands, so used a new Hurst shifter handle. Has the button for the line lock.
Now to clean up the trans & paint.
I picked up a sand blaster , but it plugs up fast. Glass that came with it is too big. I think. Going to pick smaller sand up, to do the trans mount & paint it as well.

That alone was good for at least a .1 second drop in ET, right?

On a serious note...it amazes me that the 'trained monkeys' at most major tire retailers don't realize that they should remove as many rocks/other stowaways as possible before balancing a tire. Hey...it's a rock. If it finally dislodges at freeway speed, there went your balance. On the flip side...stupid rocks! :) lol

Left click first picture. It will/should pop up bigger. Then use the next button to see the rest. Keep track of pics if you have any you want more info on.
I never started this engine.
Going for (another) re-build this winter.

Finally got into the motor some more.
After getting my trans & V-Gate in-line shifter worked out, I left the car sitting.
Pulled the engine for a closer look.
I didn't pull the cam, but can see scoring on the front lobe. No pic of it.
I pulled one rod cap. Gave up pulling others, as it is a complete waste of time.
Looks like I will try to use/salvage: bare block, bare heads, timing cover & dip stick/tube. Dampener, oil pan & pick up.
I have a Mini Plenum I'll be using on the next build (found a good guy in Ont Canada).
New carb. I'll see if the dist can be salvaged, depends on what he did to set the gear on it.

Using a spot weld drill it I drilled the battery support.
I could see some rust dust "leaking" from under it.

I'll clean off the outside of the inner fender. Then "tap" the spot welds to make them flush on the outside, to help prevent grinding/sanding the metal too thin or through.
Then grind/sand the spot welds & make it look like the support was never there.

I'll sand blast to completely remove the rust, before any primer/paint.

Did this for 2 main reasons. One, the rust. Second, I'll need the room for when I route the new heater lines.

On the way home from MT I stopped in the town where the original headers for my car (when it had the original B2 engine) have been sitting for several years.
Last time I tried to buy them, the guy wanted more than new price.
This time he took $150.00 for them.....a few dents to fix & maybe new ceramic coating, down the road.

Duh !

I raised the engine due to the Milodon pan. Headers will not fit without lowering the rack. Plus the motor mounts I made are in the way.
Gotta think on what to do......

Those are strange looking headers.
Title: Re: New car !

Scroll back up & see the hole in the inner fender. Same on both sides. Back 2 tubes on each side go through there.
Front 2 on each side go slightly forward, down and under the cross member.

Likely the same as the old Hooker swap headers went.

Sad day.... re-crate the engine to send it away for tear down and inspection.
Block will be magged, soniced and checked for core shift. Plus a detailed inspection.
Same for heads, plus flow check each port.

So far, new parts needed:
All gaskets
Seals
Crank
All bearings
Cam
Lifters
Push rods
Rods bolts ( has the cheap 8740 ARP bolts)
Rockers
Springs retainers etc
Likely valves , as they may be the cheap stainless ones
Oil pump

If the block fails inspection, maybe a whole new engine.
Even the left head gasket is on backwards.
Don't send anything to Mascar in Ca......

Called this morning.....lo ts left to check.....but lots of bad news.
It may be a week or so before I post all the info.

I'll pick the engine up on the 21st (ish) , when headed home for the season break  :'(
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on December 24, 2013, 08:19:25 AM
I sent the engine into the city (Edmonton) for a full inspection.

Wrong crank/rod bearings. The rods were binding on the outsides of the bearings. (pics of this & more will be taken after the junk parts are back home)
Wrong rod bolts - they are the ARP 8740 & no builder in his right mind uses anymore.
Was told it looks like the bearings were replaced after the dyno runs.
Rods will go through a more detailed inspection to see if they can be re-used.
Crank (so far) looks OK - more detailed inspection will be done.
Although I was charged for .030 over pistons to be turned to fit .020 bore.....they were not done. They are real .020 over pistons.
But the compression in not 11:1 as told. Worked out to 10.35:1
Bottom timing chain gear damaged (didn't look at the top one or chain)
Cam may have damage....it looked that way at home before sending into the city.
Doesn't matter - wrong one for this engine anyway.
One set of lifters backwards to the others.
Left head gasket on backwards.
This caused a heat problem & damaged the exhaust guides.
He put the cheap stainless valves in - two exhaust valves are bent.
Head is OK though.

New parts (so far) needed:
Rod bolts Maybe rods)
New .030 over pistons (to get compression up)
Rings
all bearings, seals & gaskets
New custom grind cam, solid roller.
Push rods
Lifters
Valves , springs etc
New timing chain & gears
Oil pump

New intake will be a Mini Plenum & new carb

What did I miss ?

PS: another guy had his B2 engine built at the same time as mine. Built in the same way. He was maybe 5 minutes from home & KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK !
He babied it home & is sending that engine back.
Great engine builder, huh !

Thanks for the picture.

Did a google search on mid plates. Most are too thick & aluminum ?

Is/are they bolted outside of the bell, or replace the back plate ?

Best ones replace the back plate ? I have a Quicktime bell. Steel back plate.

My Super T-10 cannot be moved back at all. I have to use an extended pilot bushing as it is.

Post by: 79prostreet on December 25, 2013, 06:48:55 PM
Reeves1, the plate I used came from S&W race cars it's 3/32 thick steel and goes between the trans & block.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on December 26, 2013, 09:10:15 AM
Was looking at a number of them this morning.

Was also looking at my car yesterday. The bell & trans still sits in the car.
I have a couple 302w blocks sitting around to make sure everything lines up.
B2 engine will not be back home till late March or April.

Looks to me I could make some 1/4" brackets that can bolt on behind the bell flange. I can make it/them so at least 3 bolts go through them.

Have to think on this more.....

Could only find a 1/8" plate on the S&W site.
I'll measure my back plate today.
Title: Re: New car !

Top right 2.5" hole is where the main wire harness will go through the fire wall.
I'll cut two 3" aluminum plates , with a center bolt (small one) & seal up the original hole.
Doing it this way so I do not have to pull the stuff off of the inside , to weld it up.

A little progress , is still progress , right ?

Made four Mini Plenum gaskets. Two are 1/16" two are 1/32".
Research showed 1/16" what people were using. Seems thick.....

Cut some plexi to keep them as made.

Since my B2 is away getting yet another re-build....

I have a spare 302w roller block. Put it in the car so I can figure out the mid mounts.
Still have not found a plate that I like.
I may have the back plate for the Quick Time bell re-made to my specs.
Or...I may make a bracket for each side of my own design.
Got to think on it......

Made a set of templates. Bigger one is for the left (drivers) side.
May trim some more off of them ?
To these will be welded angle iron. One on the frame rail.
I have poly pads (same as I used for the engine mounts).
They'll bolt to the back of the Quick Time bell.

FYI

Stopped in at the (new) engine builder in Edmonton AB.
Wish I had heard about him before sending the engine to CA.

New parts list:

Oil pump
Timing gears and chain
All new bearings
New rod bolts
Crank studs
Line bore (was .006 past max allowable)
Bore cylinders to .030
Pistons & rings
Cam, lifters, push rods
Rockers
Springs keepers etc
Valves
Head work
(what did I miss ?)
Balance & Blue Print

Shop builds everything from rail engines to stock. Has for a long time & has a very good rep.

Cost is much less than the CA build @ $6700.00 (ish)

Dyno day is another $800.00

There will be other costs.
Will not know which carb I'll be using till the dyno work.

I have four intakes.
I'll be using the Mini Plenum

Spares are :
OEM
Weiand single 4 Tunnel Ram with NOS fittings.
Weiand 2 x 4 Tunnel Ram. This one is NEW, never used.

Engine is being built for race gas (could mix if I wanted).
Not built for NOS.
Car will be scary enough without that stuff.....at least for me.

Completion date end of April (or early May).

Smiles per gallon! that's what the B2 is built for. If I know right NASCAR runs e85 in their cars now.  Reeves1 looks like your engine mounting should be good and stable, good luck with that new engine.

Got the four engine mounts done.
Sand blasted & at least 4 coats of primer.
Mid mounts are 1/4" plate & 2" angle as well.
I was going to gusset the mid plate angle iron, but think it's plenty strong enough as is. Stronger than the frame.

Frame rails are flat black right now. I'll be changing this and the mounts to semi gloss black, after the header build.

Note how I made the left side so it pulls up - right side pushes down.

There was some rust on the inside floor pan on both sides where your feet rest.
Cleaned up & put POR 15 on the rust areas.
Then painted the whole inside floor pan.
Then installed a sound proofing material.
The original stuff used was falling apart.

Originally the battery had a couple brackets & was sitting on the tank. Only 4 spots of some kind of epoxy was (not) holding it to the tank.
Didn't like the way it was in there.
Made a shelf/bracket & also installed a kill switch. Shutting it off will kill the car.
Original builder had 2 hot wires and a ground (all size 4 welding cable) going all the way to the front. I pulled all that out. One hot cable & the ground had welding type joiners.
I now have one hot cable.
Grounded to the sub frame at the back.
Likely cut 5+ lbs of copper out of the equation !

If you look back at/near the start, you'll see the battery mount .
Also the Tach was mounted near my right knee. Bad location.
I made a new mount & now it's in my sight line, where I wanted it.

Dash color strange ?
It's semi gloss black.
Same as my parts car - factory.

Dash pad was recovered at some past time. Whoever did it, did a nice job.

The dust on everything is my personal touch  ;D

Got a start on re-installing the carpet. Pictures keep turning out dark - so pictures later.
Got most of the engine compartment wiring done. More to do after the engine is back.
New rack mounted. Passenger side bracket has been sand blasted - will install after paint has dried.
Lucked out on the rubber being in mint shape.

Note the 90 degree fittings on the heater hoses. Wanted a "clean" install, and ran them down the inner fenders.
Nice blue silicone hoses !

All bolts, nuts, washers, screws  etc have been replaced with new.

All hose clamps have been replaced with banded clamps.

NAPA
3/4 elbow connector 9925
5/8 elbow connector 9924

Behind the catch tank for the rad I reduced the 3/4 hose to 5/8 with reducer connector 9911

Used banded clamps. Looks much nicer when no rubber/silicone is sticking through the slots.

Define simple LOL.... My wagon driver is a parts car that will get stripped & scrapped in a couple more years.

I can't get the NOS carb sorted & the resulting 14 mpg has led to a freshened 2.3 sitting in the garage, new clutch/flywheel/T5 trans to replace the automatic, pedals/ clutch cable, new Weber 38, NOS distributor, NOS Duraspark box, new header, new Dynomax muffler, freshly bushed control arms with new ball joints & a freshened manual rack to get rid of the worn power rack. I've probably spent $1500 so far.

All this to keep my beater running another couple years until I get the new body whipped into shape & all because 2 different carbs & 50 hours of fiddling under the hood leaves my engine running rough & getting 14 mpg just like it did "BEFORE" I laid a finger on it.

Yeah, "SIMPLE" !!

Called the engine builder yesterday. Said the pistons etc are due to arrive any day.....two months late. So far. >:(

I've got the wiring done as far as I can go , without the engine in place.
Outside of inner fenders has a new coat of "tar".
Frame rails painted.
I need to take the swing arms in to press out the old bushings & push the new ones in.
Then blast them & paint......
New brake lines to the back done.
Need to run new fronts next.

DUH !

I normally double & triple check stuff.....
Was told the Wilwood brake kit I needed is kit # 140-11017

Wrong !

Was assembling the right side swing arms etc & test fit.....and the first part is the caliper bracket.
Not hard to see it wasn't even close.

Everything else seems to fit right....maybe just need the other bracket from the right kit , # 140-1013 ?
I'll e-mail Wilwood to find out.

If I have to buy the whole kit # 140-1013.......I'll have the 74 - 78 kit up for sale soon.

or

Maybe someone was planning to do the 74 - 78 brake up-grade....they could buy my kit, send to me. I would then send this kit to you. Even give the person a break on the price ?

I have the Wilwood 140-10440-BD kit for mine. It was going on the 76 wagon but now I plan to use it on the 72 so I guess I'm in the same boat except my set can't use any other caliper brackets. I may try the late spindles on it.

Wilwood got back to me & said a person can buy just the caliper brackets.
However, he did not say if that was the only difference in the kits.

I'm going to (try) and sell mine. Get the whole (right) kit.

It should be the only difference. Can Wilwood supply a list with part numbers to compare both kits?

Just checked.
If you scroll to the bottom of the Wilwood page there is a PDF.
Clicked on it & scrolled down to page 2 & it shows the parts numbers.
I'll compare later.

Thanks for pointing that out....I didn't think of that ! (another DUH ! Must be getting old ! LOL !)

Printed out the first pages of each PDF for both sets.
Right one is supposed to be kit # 140-1013.
Look at the caliper bracket.
My head isn't wrapping around how it's the right one, if you look at a disk brake spindle on a 72.
No time to read right now between 3 & 4 AM.
I'll read at work, where I have more time  ;D

The drawing for my kit looks correct.

http://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitsProdFront.aspx?itemno=140-10440-BD (http://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitsProdFront.aspx?itemno=140-10440-BD)

The drawing for the 71-73 kit looks like it bolts in place of the dust shields

http://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitsProdFront.aspx?itemno=140-1013-B (http://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitsProdFront.aspx?itemno=140-1013-B)

I have a pair of stock 77 spindles I can send you with the oil pan if you want to try them. I keep hearing they bolt right on early cars with the only difference being a 3/4" ride height change.

Read the two print outs yesterday.
Too many different parts to mix & match.

I was off work a bit early so I called Wilwood. Every one busy so left my phone number.
Of course....they didn't call back.

I've put the kit I have up for sale here in AB first, as I offered to eat the tax & shipping.

Thanks for the parts offer, but I'll leave the ones I have on.
The tie rod ends on yours would be bigger as well.

The old adjustable Koni shocks will be replaced with 90/10s......when/if I find a set.

The original black powder coat was tough !
Tried paint stripper - wouldn't touch it.
Started sand blasting & knew it would be hours & truck loads of sand.
Took them to town to a place called "The Head Doctor". He put them in his hot tank.
Picked them up the next day & they were 100% clean to bare metal.
He didn't charge me for it. We did some wheeling/dealing in the past. He is the fellow I got the closed chamber heads from.

More of a "Got this far & cannot quit" sort of thing.

Gave the (newest) engine builder a dead line of Dec. 20th to have the engine done.
He didn't make it.

Gave him another dead line : engine has to be in the car by Jan 4th - or yet another season will be lost.

Engine not ready.

Too much $ into it to stop.

I've started collecting all I'll need for a 2nd (car) build. Have most of what I need for it now.

Engine done.
Pick it up Feb 2/15.

Been a long haul getting this done. Not to mention a truck load of cash.

Much to do after it's installed. Plus another truck load of cash.

BOSS 302 stuff is hard to find and rare....

Engine builder could not find any 2" headers. Had to use ones with 1 3/4" tubes - which chokes this engine big time.
He also did the dyno with a 750 DP Holley. Way under carbed.

I do not have the TQ numbers (yet).
But the engine "quit" building power at 6500 RPM -header/carb issues.

Came in at 510 HP - so far.

(hope it's not the custom cam)

After I get new headers built (April or May) and get an 850 DP (min) on it, it should be well over 550 HP.

Unless something (more) goes wrong, picking it up this morning.......

It's fiddly business. Especially out of a jig. It's easier when you have the car in house. I'd plasma cut the plates too. There can be a lot of inner and outer radius sectioning in tight fit situations. And getting collectors right takes some practice. Just learn, live, love your tig.

Hey, can you take pictures? I'm starting to build CNC plasma cutters. I would like to keep a small shop busy building something. I could do work for Micron here, it's not fun. I have that shop and CNC Plasma cutter up in about a month. I don't have a bender, but will get one if I need. Right now we're building plasma cutters for Nampa Machines and nexSteel will be where we make stuff. We are doing a CNC milling machine also. I am buying a steel brake first. I love the idea of this if I can get templates :)

Thanks 76!

Those are good numbers for a 302,lots more power can be made with a 750 carb and you might not make any more with a 850 but you will or might lose some street-ability unless you are just wanting the most and are willing to put up with it.
What are your cam Specs  Dur @.050 intake and exh and Lift intake and exhaust.

Engine home. Finally !
Will be in touch re: specs.

FYI - B2s were capable (Trans AM) of handling over 1200 cfm : depends on build.

I have dyno data on the difference between 750 & 850. With my build it should easily handle 850 + with no problems, and still have [some] street manners  ;D

Not yet - maybe today ?

Got caught un-prepared for days off. Was home for what was supposed to be one day. Then the foreman calls late in the day to inform me he is "resetting" us, so we can work a full 24 days.
So 1st day little got done. Yesterday lost 1/2 a day going to town for stuff. Will lose 1/2 day today getting all my stuff ready for work, so I can leave 4-5 AM.
Didn't get the scheduled time off - couldn't make appointments for my truck & other stuff - that will now have to wait a month.

Engine / trans in.
Mounting not bolted. Tons of small stuff to do , next days off.

Took about 2 - 3 hours to drop it in.
Had the back plate & flywheel bolted on. Tight fit to drop in.
Clutch, bell etc has to be bolted on after it is in place.
Shifter bolted on.

Next days off will be getting it ready for the Header build.
Several other custom parts need to be built as well.
Couldn't do them before the engine was in......

Didn't take any.
The water neck on a Mini Plenum has two.
I do not like the thermostat housing that came with it. Going to have another one made. May end up using an inline (in hose) stat.

With the last engine / different intake, I cut the Lokar throttle cable to length - which is too short now for the taller Mini.
Like I've said.....chang e one thing & you'll have to change 10 other things !

Pictures can be seen by looking back in this topic.

BTW.....the car's VIN is stamped onto the block in the normal location now  ;D

I (finally) found inline thermostats. New style, not like the old Ford 8-N tractor ones.

http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/mez-wn0072

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/53260/10002/-1

I like the second design best.

I now know how the new system will be built.

There will be two 90 degree stainless bends. Cope one onto the other, turning to the right side.
Bosses will be welded on for the 4 other things that need to connect.
Should have pictures after the Header build.....

Looking at the intake manifold noticed you have the rare cross boss one, would have been very nice if you had the inline autolite four barrel carb, the only thing about them they had no choke and are super rare and expensive $$$$$

Cross BOSS is a different intake.
This is the Bud Moore Mini Plenum.

I have a picture of a Cross BOSS - in a Pinto....

While the smaller in lines are street able, the bigger ones work best WFO. ie: Trans AM

Its been years since I have seen one, back in the very early 70s,  we had a small group of ford guys and one of them worked at the local ford dealer in the parts department, he had one with the manifold on his 70 boss 302 mustang , later he brought a spare engine shortblock for it, first thing you noticed it had four bolt mains and screw in core plugs,  later found out the rods were the special 3/8 bolt 289 long rods , the boss Pistons only would fit with that combination,  that is what made made me notice yours because of the top that comes off, did not know it was a bud more,  on the pluss side it makes porting the intake to match the heads a dream,  thank for reviving old memories from the past 😸

The Bud Moore intakes have been going as high as (for NOS) $4500.00 +

CROSS BOSS now : http://www.ebay.com/itm/131487913847?item=131487913847&viewitem=&vxp=mtr

First B2 engine I bought back in the 70s for $200.00. All parts on boxes. 6 of the 8 pistons had cracked skirts. Common for them to do that.
I replaced all rotating parts. Seem to remember it cost about $1300.00 ?

Huge difference now ! Most people would have a stroke if they knew how much $ I now have in my engine !

That one is going for $10,500 on the link. I amazed at what I put into my cars to be honest, or even my truck. You've built one heck of an engine there Reeves. It not only looks awesome, it looks like an amazing runner.

All of use restoring a Pinto, or something else, end up putting way more than we expect in one.

I know what you mean on how much money you spend fixing up a car , hope you got it under lock and key, what you have in the pinto may be worth more than the contents of most people's homes, 🙀 (done the same here on some aircraft that I've owned) hope that engine runs for years for you with no trouble even when you flog it once in a while, but looking at the org cross boss intake with the carb for ten grand might not be to bad , a good fuel injection will run you half that but , that one on e bay looks nice, even got the jet kit,  as the old saying goes wish I knew what I know now back then, later Blaine ,

Very much so ! Steel bars on windows, that are blacked out. Plus a number of other security "specials".
Plus a backhoe.....if you get my meaning......

City trip yesterday.
Soda blast a 302w intake and the B2 valve covers. Covers came out nice - BOSS 302 stickers on & back on the engine.
Intake was really dirty. Needs to be walnut blasted to get it as nice as I want it.
While that was being done (soda blasting) I drove over to Mopac. Bought fuel line stuff ($ !) - start working on that next. I have 1/2" stainless tubing for the main line (8 AN fittings). I'll have to pick up a length of 3/8" stainless for the return line (6 AN).

When I headed out for the city I stopped at a rad shop in the town I live near. Explained what changes I need to the bottom hose connection ( a 90 & 45 degree bends) and the new water neck for the mini plenum. He says he can do it & make it look really nice.
I'll make a "blueprint" for the water neck & drop it off with the rad this week.
I'm not set up for aluminum or stainless welding.

Still a ton of other parts to get....it seems ! LOL !

Road trip today....going to take most of the day. Places here in Canada are far apart  ;D ;D

My case of trans oil : http://www.penngrade1.com/Products/Gear-Lubricants/GL4-SAE-80W90.aspx came in. Rather than have a shipping co. pick it up, I am.

Then off to Mopac to pick a few more fuel line parts. Need a few more fittings & stainless hose.

Looked all over for someone to make my new water neck for me , in stainless or aluminum. Found two places that would do so.....both said it will be very expensive.
So, I decided to build it myself out of steel exhaust pipe. Had on piece mandrell bent for me. I'll get it ceramic coated (inside and out) when done so it looks good.
Pick the pipe up today.

Have two/three other stops to make for other small parts.

Likely a full day driving & about $500.00 in parts......tha t I'll be able to carry in one plastic bag  :o

Good trip !

Sort of....couldn't find a 90 degree mandrell bend. Need to make some phone calls.
Forgot a couple small 8AN fittings at Mopac.

But where I picked up my trans oil , the guy has a 71 Mustang (shell) over a full tube frame with a 500+ ci Ford Hemi - over 3000 HP ! Cool car !

A few rain squalls on the way home & shortly after getting home got rain, snow ball type snow , snow & thunder etc.

The small things to tidy up a car takes time. Lots of time !

Didn't ask. Maybe Outlaw 8.50 ? Maybe faster ? Rigged up for two chutes.

Using AN fittings for the first time. Different flare angles than a normal flare kit, which is 45 degrees.
AN is 37 degrees. So new flaring tool (much better / stronger) is over $200.00 - figures !

I looked on Photobucket! WOW!

A bunch of pictures in that account have nothing to do with this car. Just dumped pictures into it for one reason or another.

Flaring tool acting up. Last two flares I had to use a wrench to turn in farther to get the flare done properly.
Maybe, doesn't like the hard 1/2" stainless metal ?
It has a center part with a pin, that releases when the flare is supposed to be done. No way to adjust.
The 1/2" feed line is done back to the new pump, except for one connection. Missing one 8AN nut.....gettin g more stuff today.

Starting the 3/8" stainless return line today.

I have to remove the tank & weld on two bungs to attach the lines.
Yes, it will be steamed out first !

Couldn't find an 1 1/2" stainless mandrel bend here. Got tired of looking local - ordered one from Summit. When it gets here I'll start on the water manifold.

Bud - thinking yours will be 1st.
I have much to get done yet. Gas tank has to come out for two bungs to be welded on. Then the last gas lines built.
The Wilwood brake/hub kit is not here yet. When I get it, I also have to get new tires/rims.
Needs the windshield replaced.
Needs front alignment.
Needs new drive shaft made.
Needs new front shocks.

As early as today I will start work on a mock up water manifold. I have mild steel the same size for this.
Will use stainless for the "real" one & have it tig welded then ceramic coated.

Gas lines to the tank will be done today.

Nothing is easy.....

You can see the plate that the original builder brazed onto the bottom of the tank for the fuel line.
I buffed a small area to weld on a new 8AN bung......and water (had tank full) started pouring out of the brazed edge.

Empty & dry tank.

It was mounted from inside the trunk, on the sub frame......wit h a really good silicone.

Not sure how I'm going to get it out. I can only get at the front edge with tools. Sides & back are too close to the tubs.

Has to come out though.....

(that fuel pump and lines are gone - all new stainless lines, fuel pump, pre-filter has been installed.

No Headers except custom will work for my car.

Tank turned out easy to remove.
Put the floor jack under the tank with some light pressure up. Went along the front with a putty knife to cut the silicone.
Thought : wonder if brake clean would break the silicone bond ?
Yup !
Tank popped out. It's in getting some fittings welded on - pick it up tomorrow.
By Friday the complete fuel system will be done !

I lied......not done by Friday !
Got one side of the tank painted....... then they started planting the field next to me.....of course, the wind is blowing towards my place. Big time dust - no outside painting.

However, I will be working again on the water manifold, which is coming along well. I'll have it done today, tacked (stainless) together & ready for complete welding.
Trying to decide on a clear coat, powder coated like my coil springs (blue) of a blue anodizing..... .

I've never welded with stainless (wire) before. Picked up a small spool & since I have spare tubing I'll "test" my skills today.

Fuel system done ! Will pick a couple gallons of gas up today/tomorrow for the pressure test.
Also have the water manifold welded by a pro. Decided to just clear coat it. If I was going to powder coat I'd weld it myself with "normal" wire.....

What is left for engines bay:
Headers.
I have to pick up a 90 & 45 bends for mods to the lower spigot on the rad, then the hose. After that is done, the electric fan, which will go behind the rad. I can only get a 14" fan behind there. I may wait on that till I put the fenders / front back on to see if a bigger fan can be used in front of the rad.

Note on the spark plug wires.....Norm al way over the valve covers would put them in the way for removing the covers to adjust the rockers (solid roller).
I know, can just pull them off the plugs. Which would be "fun" while at the track while hot, to check for lash & broken springs due to a 1/10th or so slower run.
Covers will often be off......this is not a low maintenance engine !

I'm happy with how it's coming along (except too slow) !

While brushing my teeth this morning my "brain" came up with a design for the lower rad hose.
Ordered the bends from Summit today !
Canada has a big time lack of good parts !

Very little left to do now.

Tying up a few small things.
I have the lower rad hose figured out & it will be done next week.
I primed the oil - with the new filter & 90 degree piece, no oil was it them.....which also tested the new copper tube to the pressure gage.

Going to check rockers. Have not done so after the dyno run.

I took the snorkel off the hood scoop. Set the hood on the car.....yup, needs mods.
I raised the engine & moved it back as far as I could. Along with the much higher than stock intake, the Bud Moore Mini Plenum, I need to replace the 2" high snorkel with a 3" one. Which I've seen on the Jegs site.
It will have to be modified from a slope at the back to straight up, for air filter clearance.

Need to figure out a front drive shaft loop....

Last things will be a new drive shaft & Headers....... .after I get back to work. Money is getting low....

What about a filter/housing with a smaller diameter that will clear the scoop base lip? From the pic, it looks like you could get away with that. Or maybe build a filter housing into the scoop, and use a flange on the top of the carb. with a flex seal to meet with the hood closed. Kinda' shaker style. However you go, I wish I had the same problem!

Engine bay done.
Rad hoses not clamped to rad as it will be removed for the Header build (one day).
Note the electric fan on the inside. By using a short water pump & single pulleys there is just enough room, by also using semi solid motor mounts.

the second V8 pinto i ever built was a  full framed Bogus BOSS 302 .. .. a 289 with 351 4 barrel heads  modified to fit and a genuine boss 302 intake and some other BOSS parts .. i tried to run an automatic trans in it ... big time fail ...i had to back up and read your build thread from the start to make sure you was`nt trying to run an automatic ..i later built a 460 for the pinto but could not cure a bump steer problem .. that car is still around somewhere .. i gotta find it ..

Problem with an auto in a BOSS is the way the engine is built. Not much in the bottom RPMs. Monster ports like the mid to high end.

Bud - how long are your collectors ? (need longer collectors when using an auto)
I think they are 20" on Randy's car, with 2" tubes.

Sounds more like the problem is from not running a stick.  ;)

Randy has been racing BOSS 302s for 40+ years. One of the rare ones to have them figured out.
Plus it may be due to the class he wants to run in ?

Still a long way to go before it's road ready.
Need the Wilwood brake/hub kit.
Need an 850 DP (or bigger) carb.
May need a cam change.....in the least I'm going to pull the intake & heads.
Last builder didn't give me a build sheet. Need to know valve to piston clearance.
Plus I will make sure the right head & intake gaskets were used. Originals are no longer available, for B2 engines.

Newest job is down about 8k a month. Surplus $ is in short supply....

Quite elaborate. I remember back in the 70's a friend of mine had a Spearco Pinto.  The turbo went bad and he opted to convert to a V-8 (289). I know, kind of sad now, but back then it was not a big deal.  Anyway, what he wound up doing is is just inverting and reversing the stock exhaust manifolds so they exited towards the front of the car. It was pretty ugly, odd and he still had issues with clearance getting around the crossmember.

While this is a far more sanitary installation the headers still need to snake their way through the car.  I guess it just comes with "the territory" of owning a Pinto. 61,404 reads on this post. Is that a record?

I didn't try & video this myself. Wife heard me fire it up & took video with her phone from the house.
Wind noise. You may have to let it play through the first time & hit re-play.

FYI : C111 fuel stinks ! LOL !

Still have to set timing & carb.

Street / strip.

With 12:1 compression I'm burning C111 fuel.......at $150.00 a 5 gal pail .........not driving far ! LOL !
(cheaper if I buy a 45 gal drum)

Guessing +/- 8 MPG ?  ;D

Back left (#8) header gasket blow out. Removed Headers & checked flange - ceramic coating un-leveled it. Bottom corner was not straight - file smooth & the coating is still on, so they had it too thick.
New gasket & sealant - done. (should have checked after coating - DUH !)

Taking the right side off to do the same & clearance the frame some.

Then install the new Wilwood brake/hub kit & get new tires/rims.

Front alignment booked for next Wed.
Not putting fenders back on till that is done - so I'll take some weights to simulate front parts.
New windshield installed same day.

I let the registration & insurance lapse - shouldn't have ! I now have to get another safety done......

Should be able to drive it a week from now ?

Might be a short week ! LOL
Have much to do & the wife keeps pointing out her "Honey Do" list on top of it all !

Got the right side clearance done.......exc ept I'm wondering if the Header builder made allowances for the swing arms and strut arm to move.....
Headers are loosely bolted back in. Have to tighten & put the motor mount back in.
Then start on the left side......and figure out why #8 doesn't want to seal.

Will not be driving it any time soon.... welder is also a pipe line welder & farmer - his busy season right now.
I know another guy that may be able to help. Will contact him later today ?

Pipe for #3 cyl, right side will hit the strut arm on the first bump......same for the left side.
(still messing with left side to figure out #8 pipe/flange)

Derrick, would tubular  A arms give you the room you need?
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on May 01, 2016, 10:09:03 PM
Tubes for # 3 & 7 need to be altered (or re-made) & tube for #8 has to be re-made from the head down.
Wrong angles, interference with frame rails & more.

I had them bolted on & started.... but blew out the gasket at #8 (back left) & there is no way to make them work.

Numbers 3&7 will just not work at all , due to the strut arms. First bump will flatten them & maybe bend the strut arms ..... and I do not think new ones can be had ?

Contacting the header builder in AM.......
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on May 08, 2016, 02:36:58 PM
Bud - do you still use strut arms ?
Your car is newer as well - they make them for 72s ?
Hate to change them - all new suspension parts.

I don't have any info for the early models, but for the 74 and up, the tubular control arms are usually set up to run without the struts(coil and spring, bags or coil overs). They are also available in some altered lengths, as well as adjustable ones. If any of this helps.

Test fit the left side. Only used a couple bolts in each piece ( a little more than finger tight). Have to pick up some ordered stuff this morning to finish assembly. Proper bearing grease, Loctite 271 & Wilwood high temp (600 degrees) brake fluid.....

I also had to replace the 15 lb rad caps I had gotten from Mopac.
The rubber seal in the upper part was not wide enough to seal properly & would leak a bit when shut off & cooling.

New ones from "Be Cool", makers of the rad have a wider seal & are 13 lbs.

So.......I have to flash it up & get to running temp for testing again........ oh darn  ;D

About the mpg.......it's going to be a fuel hog ! Started 3 - 4 times & burned (about) 4 gal !
(about $120.00 worth)

(pics later)

Got the stuff installed.
Had to remove the L brackets off of the frame & go a different way with the flex lines. May make yet another support bracket, that will mount to the spindle - have to check (again) stop to stop & see if the line will permit this.

Bleed the system out of the DOT 4 fluid & put all new Wilwood 600 degree fluid in.
I'll then do a final system bleed all round.

The caliper bolts that come with the kit are too short. I picked up new gr 8 bolts 1 1/2" and they are too long. Will make them right today (shorten).

Header builder is supposed to be here today to look ....... he thinks an easy fix ! LOL !

Back two tubes need to be re-made, on the left (7&8)

Third back on right (#3) has to be re-made ..... and maybe #4.

We shall see.....

I cannot haul the car to his place. Put the Wilwood brake / hub kit on & do not have the new wheels & tires yet.

Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on August 02, 2016, 07:52:46 AM
Header builder never did show up. I may try my hand on fixing the back tubes myself...... this winter. Another year/driving season lost due to others poor workmanship. Not happy.......

Coolant leak.... pulled the short water pump off. With this pump, you have no bolt in the corner of each water port (I'll post pics later). It leaked past this.
Ordering the gasket that goes between the pump 7 back plate today. I have spares for the front.
Also going to order Permatex thermostat/water pump sealant.

I also changed the front (flex) brake lines/brackets, so need to bleed them again.

If someone has 30k kicking around....... and wants this car to finish....
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on August 08, 2016, 06:53:44 AM
Forgot to take pictures....

Water pump back on.
Didn't fill with coolant. May be pulling the heads this winter to clay the pistons (last engine builder never did give me a build sheet).
Reason for clay ? Likely going to change the cam from 351w firing order , back to 302.
Also been told by a very good B2 engine guy I left as much as 60 HP on the table.
Car doesn't need more HP, but wanted a little more HP at higher RPM.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: 74 PintoWagon on August 08, 2016, 07:31:22 AM
Could use a dial indicator instead of yanking the heads.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on August 08, 2016, 07:43:51 AM
Guy to the west of me had a 351 C built by the same builder. He had been fighting an over heating problem for a while..... pulled the heads & discovered it had the wrong head gaskets.

Mine has not over heated during tests, in my shop. However, I am a worry sort of guy.....plus I need to know the head gasket compression thickness.

No OEM BOSS 302 gaskets can be purchased anymore......

Guy I'll be getting the cam from will also supply new head gaskets with the "kit".
I'm changing the roller rockers as well.....
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: 74 PintoWagon on August 08, 2016, 09:20:00 AM
That makes sense, guess I'd be pulling them too..
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on August 11, 2016, 05:37:11 AM
Gaskets are cheap.
Sort of a pain pulling the top of the mini plenum to re-torque the 4 bolts after a heat cycle though.

Adjusting rockers no big deal. This is not a low maintenance engine anyway, with solid rollers.
Checking adjustment & for broken valve springs is a "normal" thing to do....... often.
It's why I ran the plug wires the way I did.

Well built / new B2 (real) engine = 16k + then add on all the stuff that bolts to it.
Intake is a Bud Moore mini plenum - goes for 3k to 4.5k.
Super T10 that is like new, the inline shifter by Long Shifters - about 700 +(for shifter alone)
Narrowed 9" with Mark Williams High Torque axels.
Tubs & tons more.
Rust free (except for a small area on the right door).

Well, you get the gist........it's all been posted here & I'd never hold anything back !

Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on August 18, 2016, 06:18:16 PM
To finish so it can be driven.....

Headers. Fix the back tubes or start from scratch.
Front wheels/tire.
Front alignment.
Safety check, insurance.
Drive it.

To finish (like I want).
Body work.... hood needs work due to damage from last owner & me changing engine up etc.
Right door has a small area to cut out & replace with new metal.
Paint flaws , so all new paint.

Diff floated & wheely bars.
May need a new drive shaft.
Should have a better cage.

Weak point..... Super T-10 has the small input/output. Although it worked fine with a well built B2 engine in a 67 Cougar.

So close, yet so far.......

Well, something like this is more or less whatever someone is willing to pay for it, but there's always that "someone" out there that just can't live without it, that's the one you need to find. But you came this far with it you shouldn't give up on it now and finish it the way you want it.. Just MWO...

Just because I can......  ;D

Started the engine a couple days ago.
Shop still smells like race gas ! LOL

This time I was "smart" enough to wear a respirator & ear plugs  ;D
Big shop door sealed for the winter, so just a back window & man door open, with a big fan for moving air.

Letting header builder know I'm home , so MAYBE he can fix them........st ill no front wheels so cannot move it.

Work very slow this year.

Just distilled water in it right now.
Since winter temps are finally on the way, I'll fire it up again & drain when cold.
Afraid of the heat going out when I'm away , then.....

More news.... when I sent my engine to CA for that (piss-poor) re-build, I "allowed" the guy to talk me out of my block. He said it was/is a date match to some 70 cars (Mustangs). (1970 May 12)
He replaced it with a newer one. What he didn't tell me was it isn't as nice / pristine.

Yesterday I spotted an add for 3 B2 blocks...... and one is my old one !
Don't know how, but I'm going to try & get it back !

Xmas break....

Fully installed the Wilwood brake kit. Not sure if I'll leave it on , for a number of reasons. I'll try & post info later on them.

Pulled the back 2 header tubes off of each side. Head scratching about how to re-build them..... or scrap the whole set & have new ones made.

2016 being a bad earning year, other parts have not been ordered. Yet.

Need new valve springs & rockers, then the engine will be done & good to 9k RPM without any issues.
This will also bump the HP (with other changes I've done) to about 550 + HP.

Before - was no room for the upper control arm & strut arm to move upwards.

After _ I have to tighten the strut arm & this will give even more room, for the strut arm to move up. I think it's all good now. Tight space for 2" tubes. They are just tacked together & needs welding up. They are off the car now. Also re-coating.....

Fliping over backwards should not be a problem with 1/2 of the engine ahead of the front axle. That is unless your driving it backwards to take advantage of the better aeronautics going backwards.

Call last night.... Headers are done.
They will be picked up today from Edmonton & I'll pick them up this aft in town.

This is the set I re-built the back two tubes on each side.
Three of the front tubes had to be "adjusted" with a hammer.
Only other option was to build a complete new set from scratch.....wh ich I nearly did. I have a different design in my head I was going to use. Even bought a new set of flanges to start with.....

Now to order the mufflers & mandrel bends to finish the exhaust. It will be reduced to three inch & kept that size to the ends.

Ready to install, after a few other mods.
Sorry for the dented pipes. Original header builder didn't make them right & the only other option was to make a complete new set.
Have to pick up a set of stainless bolts for the slip joints.

Wilwood set up isn't what I want (will be selling this set).

Tuesday booked the car into a glass shop to install a new windshield.

Wed aft booked a front alignment.

Then re-install fenders etc & book a safety inspection.... ...

Funny you should mention what Horse I rode in on........ it was a BAWS 302 Pinto !

Yup, finally had it out on the road !
Stupid horse power !
Fast !
Also gets about 6 mpg  ;D
Love the smell of VP C-111 gas burning !

Bugs though... speedo cable takes a sharp 90 & it only lasted about 10 miles. Need to get a 90 adapter to fix.
Also lost 1st & second. Thinking shift fork. I'll know more in a week or so......

K&N says no off set filter base for me. Looks like I have to make one........?

Too much HP for a Super T-10. Broke the flange on the main shaft. Page 11 has an exploded parts page: https://www.richmondgear.com/wp-content/uploads/pdfs/richmond/UPGRADED_SUPER_T10_MANUAL_v2.pdf

If anyone knows of a person with parts, please let me know.

I also need a 90 degree adapter for my speedo cable.

Pick it up in a few days & will have it re-built.
With luck back on the road after the 20th.

I pick the Top Loader up this morning.

$800.00 for it & $875.00 ish to have it re-built.

Guess that will teach me for using a weak trans thinking I could get away with it due to a light weight car !

I have two sets of shifter rods (one set is for a Top Loader).
I have 6 shifter arms (that bolt to trans) and not one will work on this Top Loader !
So I have to order new ones.....anoth er delay !

A trans with a STRONG reputation! Is this Toploader a close (2.32) or wide (2.78) ratio version? Generally the wide ratio version is preferable.  Unfortunately the early Tigers (like mine) came with the close ratio.

As noted in your post Toploaders aren't cheap.  Jeep used a version in their trucks from 80-96 in three different ratios.  I was hoping to pick up a wider ratio (actually Jeep's close ratio) cheap at a Pick Your Part (about $100) but after looking for around 15 years and only ever finding one..., it had the wrong gears (not the T-178, 3.01 1st gear I desired).

Glad to see this project is getting near the end. Enjoy.

Wide ratio

Nice. I have heard some of the Cobra racers prefer the close ratio gears and have swapped with Tiger owners. I have not had that fortunate of an offer.

I envy you owning a Tiger !

Took 4 days , lots of head scratching & calls to Long Shifters to get the shifter working properly.

Put it together as Long Shifters said & it wasn't even close to working.

Did my way & got all working as it should.

Doing some other small jobs, painting the trans & may have it all back together today.....?

Bench fit shifter - all good.
Remove shifter & install trans.
Go to install shifter......a nd it will not work.
Took some measurements.. .. that I should have before....and the mounting plate is about an inch farther ahead than it was on the T-10.

Have to buy or make a new plate.....and pull the trans. Again.

Shifter mounting plate was 3 3/8" different.

Got some aluminum plate in town & made a new one. Looks & worked like factory.

Everything back in / on car.

Exhaust hangers this morning & road ready again.......ex cept I may not have time to drive it.
Many home things to do before work starts up again.....

Well, that didn't last long.....

First hard shift into 2nd & felt something go wrong. It's stuck in 2nd - but I can still shift into 1st. When I ease the clutch out it acts like it locks up the trans (like brakes on).
I can also shift in / out of 3 & 4.

I'll be inspecting the shifter today - hope I just forgot to tighten a bolt of nut.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: pinto_one on July 10, 2018, 07:31:25 AM
its prob the shifter , you can not go into two gears at the same time without locking up the trans and the whole drivetrain , also you should not be able to move shift levers 1 and 2 aganst 3 and 4 , because of a pin in the middle (if its in place ) from doing so , if you can bring it back to where you Ooverhauled it to put it in if you can move both at the same time , they are offten left out my mistake and not safe to do so ,

Called the place that rebuilt it & I have to take it back in.

Likely going to have a new longer input shaft installed as well.

Car will be down for a while. Maybe the rest of the summer......

Shifter is off the trans. Using a wrench I can shift it into first & neutral. Not into second. Still stuck in second. Locks the trans up when shifted into first.
Same for 3 & 4.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: pinto_one on July 10, 2018, 04:01:56 PM
what you have is a trans out of a big block ford , you may have to change the clutch disk because the input spline is smaller , the ratio is diffrent also , but that was almost 45 years ago when I done it , I also had the short shaft and found that over a short time the trans would pop out of high gear , it was the pilot bushing wearing out because the shaft was in it less than half way , at higher rpm when you shift the shaft would be clamped of center rolling the shift colloer of the input shaft , the fix was a spacer and a ball bearing , I think you have the wide ratio trans , 3.32  and the small blocks took the 2.78 first gear ratio , could be wrong , after over 40 years you tend to forget  :o
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Wittsend on July 10, 2018, 05:11:23 PM
Could be wrong but I thought the Toploaders were all 2.78 (wide) or 2.32 (close). The Big Blocks did get a thicker input shaft. Length may be different too.

Lots of stuff out there. Try David Kee for info. http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/idchart1.htm (http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/idchart1.htm) or, Dan Williams http://www.toploadertransmissions.com/toploaderinfo.html (http://www.toploadertransmissions.com/toploaderinfo.html) or, http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html (http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html) or,  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Toploader_transmission (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Toploader_transmission)

Yes on the thicker , but also shorter , that is what I came across one time , you may have to use a spacer also ,
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on July 11, 2018, 06:17:42 AM
Found the David Kee site yesterday. The site shows the longer input shafts.

Going to search the tag on trans to see what comes up - today.

Right now I have an extended pilot bushing in place. Going to get the longer input & replace the bushing with a "normal" bearing.

Talked with the trans shop that rebuilt it. He has never seen or heard of a Top Loader doing this & suspects it may have 2nd gear seized on the main shaft. Which is un-likely. It's new.

When it's discovered what is wrong I'll up-date.

I'm also going to order a new mounting plate for the shifter, along with another set of shift arms for the trans. (the ones that bolt to trans). This is the inline shifter by Long Shifters.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: pinto_one on July 11, 2018, 09:50:26 AM
The shifter I used was a Mr Gasket V-Gate inline shifter , used it for years untel some High as a kite POS ran into it ,Totaled ,  some top loaders had two postions to install the shifter on the tail shaft houing , some only had one , fwd or rearward , I used the rearward holes and the shifter boot covered the huge hole just right and in stock location , I was lucky back then because we had a warehouse next to the speed shop and they were alway borowing our forklift so they would let me try the diffrent shifter set ups to try , and also never heard a top jam up like that ,
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on July 12, 2018, 06:11:34 AM
Something told me to double check measurements on the input shaft.

There is an inch inside the extended pilot bushing. So it's OK.

Going to pull the trans apart today......
Title: Re: New car !

Took a video of the trans problems - but have not found a way to post it.

Ended up taking it back to the place that re-built it. Warranty.

It's done & they have no idea how or why the 2nd gear syncro got jammed into the gear, locking it up.

Picking it up Monday.

Also sent an e-mail to Long Shifters asking for the right shift arms part numbers. No reply yet.

Been looking at the Hurst Street Super Shifter......

I had the same type of problem happen to me with a previous Mustang/Toploader about 20 years ago.
Long story short, the original case got broken and the whole trans was replaced with a used one of unknown history. Shortly thereafter I was in a parking lot and it did what yours did; went into second gear and back into first, but 2nd stayed engaged. IIRC one of the rail detents inside had fallen out. Trans wasn't damaged, but it was a big PITA for such a small part.

The Big Blocks did get a thicker input shaft. Length may be different too.
390GT toploaders did not get close ratios nor the big shaft option; it looks like a smallblock part with a shorter pilot. Big shaft boxes came behind 427/428/Boss engines and as a result are a lot less common and a LOT more expensive.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Wittsend on July 26, 2018, 11:38:56 AM

It seems that ANY Toploader isn't cheap these day($1,500-$3,000). Well, excluding the 3 speeds and the SROD.  My Tiger has the close ratio, older bolt pattern with a 5 bolt bellhousing (5 bolt 289). I had hoped to find a wide ratio but not at current prices. 2.32 close, 2.78wide are the 1st gear ratios.  Some people had considered the overdrive Granada/truck Toploader for the late 70's - upward. But the 1st gear ratio is 3.29 (too low) in one version and because it reaches an overdrive level the gear spread has some rather large jumps.

For about 15 years now I have searched the self serve yards for an 80-86 Jeep truck that used a Toploader (T-178). Had I found one it would have been about $100. It had a 3.01 first and was non-overdrive. The ratio spread was decent.  It probably falls into the "Hens Teeth" catagory. In all that time I think I found two Jeep truck of that vintage that weren't Automatics. One was 4X4 (and the wrong ratio). the other was a standard Toploader but again the wrong ratio. The T-176 and T-177 seems to be popular with the Jeep crowd because of their low 1st gear. So, I thought the T-178 would be a "get rid of" trans..., but nope. Seems it was rare to begin with and not to be found today.

A T-5 seems a cheaper proposition for the Tiger at this point. But there I need a pricy dual pattern scatter shield or a cast iron dual pattern Ford bellhousing for the 5 bolt 289. The window is pretty narrow when the world class started ('86) and the point where they change ('94). I can't seem to ever find those desireable T-5's at Pick Your Part anymore.  I think time passes quickly as we get older and "WHAT..., the '88 Turbo Coupe arrangement in my Pinto is 30 years old!!!"  That TC was only 6 years old when I got it.
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: 65ShelbyClone on July 26, 2018, 12:14:38 PM
There are adapters to fit a T5 onto your narrow Toploader bellhousing. Another middle ground option would be to find a wide ratio gearset and put it in your original narrow case. Just thinking out loud.
Tremec 3550s and TKOs use the wide toploader pattern, but they cost at least as much as Toploaders now.

Went ahead & bought the shifter. It's on the way.

I (finally) got in touch with the guy. He says he has an install kit & will deal on it when he is back to work.
Soon I hope !

Had the old MT sticky tires pulled off the rims (wheels). Going to clean them up & next week order new ones. They will be 26 x 11.50 x 15.
Old ones were W5 compound. New ones R2 (if I remember right ?) which is more sticky.
Also going to order new fronts. They are about 17 years old (date on tires).

Didn't change the diff. Had the car out one time , so far.
3k RPM at 60 MPH / 100 KPH.

New shifter works VERY well ! Sits so far to the left I used the small white ball. Just changed it out with a T handle , with the line lock button.
So I'll have to keep my right leg straight up.

New (to me) 15 x 3.5 wheels leak. I have to take the off & water test to see what is leaking....
Title: Re: New car !
Post by: Reeves1 on July 02, 2019, 06:59:19 AM
The new front tires not good ! 4 out of 5 leaked air. Thought I was OK...checked the air in them several times over a few days & they were holding air.
Was taking the car out last Thursday & checked....the newest one on the right was down to 18.5 lbs from 50 lbs !

New back tires. The old are ET Street 26 x 11.50 x 15 with W5 rubber compound.

New are ET Street P275 / 50R15 with R2 compound : much more sticky. Not liking how the outsides roll up. But they stick much better than the old ones.

For years I've been meaning to check the pinion angle.
Finally did.
It was 4 degrees up (+).
I changed it to 1.5 degrees down.
This rolled the diff forward & the tires rubbed at the front. I took the ladder bars off & loosened the diff at the spring mounts & moved it back as well.
All adjusted now , as well as pre loaded the right tire , by lowering the left ladder bar.

Now I just need the time off & good weather to get it out.......rain every day for over a month now !

Piss Poor year.....Covid , lack of work ($) so I didn't get the car out this year.
I started it the other day to check timing etc.
The MSD had the biggest (black) stop in it. It would only advance to about 30 degrees.
Need 36-38.
Put two sizes smaller & still not enough , so put the smallest (red) stop in.
Still have to open the shop & try again.
