I seem to have hit the jackpot. appears to have 3.80 posi 8". maybe even 31 spline, a Boss 302 oil pan and a lot of cam. A big Griifin radiator and a mechanical fan! held up under heavy traffic in warm weather too!

Your headers are real close to your MC / rear brake line.
Which WILL over heat it : you need a heat shield & make sure you use dot 4 brake fluid (withstands heat better).

thanks Reeves I will do that!
Crowed a little too soon there, the next morning it sprung a leak in cylinder head freeze plug, the rear. More than an excuse to see what was inside the motor. 2482 pistons appeared and a mystery cam (since I cant figure out this dial indicator mount to suss lift..) attached to stock rotator retainers and rail rockers with screw in studs and guideplates. Now that the heads are off I HAVE to grind the untouched exhaust ports before I can slide them into a machine shop. Probably new everything for a single coil hot hydraulic cam should do the trick. new freezeplugs for sure. Some krylon 1923 and back together with a single plane and better air cleaner.
oh yeah, dont forget to detach your transmission dipstick before pulling the head! what a mess.

A 1.6 72" with that weird half hatch half window just popped up locally. Supposed to have 36000 miles. Maybe that would be a better car to mod.

I am certain it would. Im confused about this, but it seems those halfwindow hatchbacks are 71 only?
mine has a later hatch in back. heavy too.
I wouldnt mind finding the correct hatch for it, of only to see the weight difference!
If you have a cherry late Pinto and the option of picking up an early car to V8, especially a 71 take a crack at the early car and preserve what has
nicely survived. I thought the 74 on was more suitable, but now I see the light. they both work, the earlier cars have harder parts to source, but lighter weight and classic Pinto looks. If I can get my 72 wagon put together I will be looking for another 71. shoot me.

Yes is is a 71'.
I had a look at the car, but it has some rust issues with that hatch and one of the doors.
