Title: Finally got the Offy manifold and Holley 6299 4 bbl. dialed in.
Post by: hydrodriver on July 06, 2012, 08:44:02 PM
Several tries - first thought I was jetted to rich, went from .064 down to .056, car didn't like that, stumbling bad when secondaries opened up.  Then tried a power valve blank, that really didn't work.  Spark plugs were snow white, way to lean. Went back to .064's and power valve that came in the carb, looks to be a 4.5, and reset the floats high.  Engine took off like a shot!  Shifted 1 - 2 at 6600 RPM, didn't mean to it just gained RPM fast!
So now we have new aluminum radiator, puller fan, solid lifters, 90 psi double valve springs, Racer Walsh Stage One cam, Offy manifold and Holley 6299, header and open exhaust.  Will run the track tour July 14 at Road America, that will give us an hour on the engine, then will race Road America on August 11-12.

Yes, it feels much stronger when you step on it - until we get a chance for wide open throttle, which will be next Saturday on the long straights at Road America, that will tell the tale - we have always needed 10 mph to be competitive on the top end, maybe now we have it.
And it looks really neat when the hood it open -

When you were setting up your carb. did you notice any siphoning out of the accelerator pump squirters? I have been fighting the problem for awile now. It really messes up the mixture at certain RPMs.
I am currently running a Spearco manifold and find the throttle response better than with the Offy. The trick wiith these setups is too make sure the secondarries dont open up until the air flow / rpms are up.
Let us know how it performed on track when you get back home.

I had one of the 390's and an Offy way back around '78 on my 2.0. It ran OK.....but it never seemed to perform as well as the Holley/Weber and stock intake. I was drag racing it regularly and street playing and I eventually went back to the original setup. Looking back some nice port work etc would have helped too.

I always figured the 390cfm should be faster...but at 18 years old I probably wasn't that great of a tuner! But it did run 14.60's!!

The linkage setup I remember was really funky..what did you use? Pics?

Had it out for around 20 minutes today on the highway in 90 degree heat - never ran over 160F.
Yep, pictures forthcoming soon as I take some.  Will wait until after Road America tract tour Saturday.  Will have the Go Pro camera in the car - maybe I can share that somehow.

Road America Track Tour, July 14 at the HAWK vintage classic.  IF you ever get the chance to go - this racing show is the best around.  From Formula One Bennetons to 3 wheel cycle powered Morgans, Formula 5000 cars (14 of them), Can Am, everything except a Chapparral,  smaller displacement sedans - 61 of them took the green in one heat - cubic money Allards and Astons, and one Pinto - ours!
They treated us as if we had rolled in with a million dollar Ferrari.  So we parked and started to unload off the trailer - had the ramps down, gave the car a push, it got away from us and the right front wheel fell off the ramp!  Landed on the lower suspension arm, jacked the car up, pulled the ramp out, no harm, no foul.
Went out close to last for the one hour track tour, had a Daytona Cobra cope replica in front of me  funny how I couldn't keep up with him -  we did pass several BMW's and other high dollar foreign stuff.  Had the Go Pro running the entire time, will try to edit that for some in car postings.  Ran the entire hour, all the street cars were directed off track back to spectator parking, we were directed into the pits!  Foot traffic was bad, and before we got to our trailer we were at 220 water temp.  Shut it off and temp was at 235, air temp was around 90.  My son was about to open the hood when pow!  Lower rad hose separated from the rubber reducer and there went our water.  So we found our weak link, now to redo the hose system with a Loctite rubber to rubber adhesive.  We had as many people looking at our car as the high dollar stuff.
