completed t9 swap
« on: April 04, 2012, 12:18:39 AM »
I have not found one forum about a successful t9 swap, i tried it and did it, but its not a direct swap, i installed the trans only to find out that the input shaft is too long by 1/4 inch, my car is a 77 original 4spd, you will probably need to cut off that tip if you have a older 2.3 engine, also the throwout bearing is different the fork is different and bell housing, use the xr4tis bell fork and throwout, the 4spd bell is shorter, if you use it, you wont get the tranny to mate to the engine. For things to change now, weld and redrill the clutch fork hole for the cable, the pintos clutch cable is smaller and will fall through the fork, speedo cable needs to be foot longer, and if your car is lowered like mine, you need to cut a inch off the driveshaft. next the trans mount, use the crossmember, go to your auto place and get a Volvo engine mount #2424, it will thread into the tranny and you drill one hole in your crossmember and bolt it in, after all of that and a six pack you will have a 5Th gear and be able to keep up with traffic finally.

I did this swap on a early small bumper 2.0L but it is the same with the later 2.3L, there is a few things you need to do to make it work, the first is you need to cut the input shaft down where it slips into the pilot bearing, cut off 9mm, you'll need to cut the sleave the release bearing rides on to match (measure the stock 4sp trans and match) the next thing you have to do is cut a hole in the bellhousing to allow the room for the,,,  what the heck is the name of that thing........  you'll see what I'm talking about when you try to install the stock 4 speed bell onto the T-9, and the last thing you need to do is use a XR4TI release bearing (throwout bearing)  this allows the stock bell housing, clutch fork, clutch, pressure plate, and cable to be used....   even the stock drive line works fine,,  IMO a great swap, really made the car go down the freeway much better and picked up fuel mileage.  The down side is the T-9 is gettting hard to find at a reasonable price
Here's a PM I got from Skunky a year or so ago when I did the swap...

The T9 is a much easier install just cut 9mm off the input shaft where it goes into the crank. The outer throwout bearing sleeve needs to be cut to the same length as your stock 4 speed sleeve. Use a Merkur XR4tI throwout bearing. Bolt it up and go. you do have to lengthen your rear trans support by an inch or so ,the stock 4 speed mount will work fine. The T9's were stock equipment for the Merkur XR4TI and work well behind the 2.0

i thought that would work, i just didn't wand to cut the sleeve down , i was also worried the splines would be too long, i did notice the layshaft size was different too, I'm going to be getting a second t9 soon and do the mods to it after rebuild, thanks for the info, where were you when i was putting this thing in the first time, also the shifter aiming to the right is alittle annoying, i thought it was bent, so i checked the other too and thew were the same. i just wanted to get it out on the forums so others like me can do this swap and have instructions.

Try this place for T-9's he has some parts also..
I fixed the wierd shifter angle by putting it in a press and giving it a little tweak.....
