Title: 1978 Pinto Wagon Rallycross
Post by: draggindrew on July 27, 2012, 04:39:40 PM
So back at christmas I bought my second pinto that was really rough and rusted pretty bad. I bought it as a gag gift for my sisters 16th birthday. I bought it not running and only spent a few bucks on a carb kit and a headlight and had it legal tagged and inspected. I drove it around town for a few months for fun and came across rallycross racing. So now I have been rallycross racing the pinto as often as possible. In fact I have a race tomorrow in College Station, TX I will be attending. I only have a few pictures but I will be sure to get plenty more tomorrow.

I have to ask, did that car come from Wisconsin because if it did, that's my old wagon.

LOL actually yes it did! The guy I bought it from was from Wisconsin and had used the car to move here to Texas then bought a moped and didnt need the car because he had another car his mom was gonna bring him soon. It had a sticker on the back that said something like DAHL Autos or something like that. You wouldnt happen to know the history behind it would you?

Ok, now I am LMFAO!!!  You are going to tell me that a car that I had towed out of a goat farm in Wisconsin is now in Texas?  ;D ;D ;D I bought the car from a younger guy and had it towed to my house with plans to fix it up because it was a V-6 Squire wagon plus it was only 500.oo (including delivery).  I patched a hole in the gas tank with some putty stuff, replaced the water pump (so that is new) and attempted to replace the brake lines. Oh yeah, I put CHEAP patches in the floors because they were a little rotted out LOL!!  But I was able to drive it across the street to the Milwaukee Mile for a couple of event and had a little bit of fun with it. I have no clue as to the other history of it other than the guy I got it from used to drive it back and forth to school about 10 years ago (he was young)
I sold it to a guy on Craigslist for more than I had into it (that pretty much scammed me) and he said that said he was going to drive it to shows. A few weeks later I saw it on here AND E-Bay for sale with an asking price if something like 2000.oo so I was a little pissed. Long story short, a guy in Madison WI bought it and was a little pissed that he had gotten screwed and I never heard from him again.
I have a picture of a goat jumping on the car somewhere the day I bought it LOL!!!

This is way too funny  ;D ;D ;D

Here's the story when I first got it. Like I said, I drove it over to the Mile for a couple of events but since it was not running right, I just parked it so it never made laps. Also here's a couple of the day I got it

Jeez this is too funny! I actually stumbled across your facebook on another post and dug up all those photos and a few more lol. I actually only paid $400 for the car. It wouldnt stay running because all of the carb gaskets and accelerator pump were dried out. As far as the floors go there is a pretty good hole in your patches lol. Every good dip I hit at the rallycross, I had a gallon of dirt get scooped up into the floorboards lol. I need to repatch them. As far as the a/c when I bought it, it was gone, at least the compressor was. Of all places to need it now that it is in Texas it now has no a/c. It really needs alot of work still but as far as just a fun around towner it gets the job done. Im glad you told me about the water pump because I was about to put a new one on it soon because there is a bearing wore out somewhere and I thought it was the water pump but now I get to do a little more investigating. Did you put in a new thermostat when you did it? By the way the paint job was a middle of the night krylon job and it turned out pretty well. I love your red wagon by the way it is gorgeous. My other pinto is a 1977 pinto drag car. My dad built the car in 88' and raced it for several years then sold it to buy me a jr.dragster. after 8 yrs of jr drag racing, we built an 81' camaro drag car and raced it for about 3 yrs. Then the opportunity came up to buy back the pinto so we did and raced it for another 3 yrs then tore it all down to do a bunch of much needed updating and to make the car fit me better seeing as how I am 6'9" and 425lbs lol. It has been about 3 yrs now and we are getting close to completion. Just needs paint and reassembly.

When I replaced the water pump, I dont remember putting a thermostate back in it LOL!!!  I know I did not put the A/C stuff back in so who knows where that is. I know I gave all of the parts to the guy I sold it to.

Just an FYI.  Dahl Auto is still in buisness up here in WI.  They are based out of LaCrosse, WI.  Most likely thats where this car came from originally.  And Im not shocked that its that rusted out....every one I've had has been just as rusted out!

So just thought I would give a little update to my thread...I have been doing alot of rallycross racing with my wagon and have had a blast doing it. My wagon has ultimately become the most loved car at our events. I drove into the roadrace track for lunch one day and they had a huge Porsche and BMW track day going on. I received so many thumbs up and comments. Then I came to a stop and had nearly 20 guys owning cars well into the $60k and up wanting to know every detail of my car and taking pictures of it. I will say it again. THE BEST $400 I HAVE EVER SPENT!!!!!!!!!

Dude love the grill, but you need a rear bumper sticker that says point towards enemy...
