see if your idle stop solenoid is hooked up and working .. it is there to idle the engine up with the car running then when you shut the switch off the solenoid kicks out and drops the throttle  to shut position .. it may have went bad in the past and a previous owner just set the carb idle higher .. with the idle solenoid you dont adjust the carb idle set screw .,, if you dont have an idle solenoid you can add one ,, i had to put one on my Chevy V6 pinto  for the same reason ..

Dropped the fuel tank tonight still had around
8 or 9 gallons left inside for 32yrs. Smells amazing lol. Cleaned the rust off one of the tank straps then primed all of it except where the bolt was just need to remove it just got tired and will do it later. Just need to clean up the underside now for undercoating

there is on listed on e-bay. the only problem i see with it is, that the two center mounting tabs are
broken. and that he has it listed as a 74-75 grille. listing number 313753394906.  good luck
The broken tab could be fixed with another piece of similar plastic and plastic welding on and hole drilled to fit. Plenty of YouTube videos on how to

This has been covered several times on this forum. Just do a search. There are some rims from other cars that fit just right in 14 n 15 that are 4 lug just have to get the correct back spacing. Here is a picture of someone who used a 91 mustang 16in rims 4 lug not sure on the back spacing specs
