Title: What Fuel Sending Units were used in Pintos?
Post by: Henrius on August 16, 2018, 09:35:16 PM
My original sending unit is rusted to pieces. I can't find a new one or a good used one.

Surely the Pinto was not the only Ford that used this particularly sending unit. We the ones in larger Fords like the Maverick and Mustang really different? If they were,  could the float arm be modified to fit the Pinto tank?

Did you ever find a replacement?

do you have an answer or do you need to also know ?   my sending unit came from a 69 mustang ..it is shaped very similar to the stock unit .. you have to bend the two locating tabs flat to rotate/ orientate  the unit close enuff to work .. you may have to also block off a return line .. it was over 10 years ago when i did mine ..

I'm dropping the tank tomorrow, I'd like to replace the sending unit/sock while I'm in there but I can't find a single thing anywhere. I wonder if parts companies just steer clear of any pinto fuel tank parts. I'll check out the 69 Mustang sender. Thanks for the info!

My body guy modified a sender from another car. Which model, I am not sure.

An old thread here I know, but I just found an answer in the General Help column under a thread entitled "gas gauge". One of the replies goes on to say that, depending on your vehicle year, a Spectra FG178B or FG176something will fit Pintos and Mustang II.

As a Mustang II owner too.  There are (2) sender designs for the M-II.   Autozone and Rock Auto still sell these.   One is for 4 and 6 cylinder cars (it has the fuel level sender and one pickup tube for gas).  The other is for V8s.  This has a second fuel connection to drain the fuel from the second tank in the fender into the main tank.   This sounds very odd - but it's the way Ford did it to get the range up for the V8 (the V8 was an afterthought).  Be sure you get the correct one - Autozone had the applications swapped in their ordering systems, but the pictures were correct.   I haven't tried to see if the M-II part fits the Pinto tank.  I only have wagon tanks loose & these are different again....
