Title: Upper control arm squeek
Post by: Jerry merrill on April 05, 2013, 07:25:52 PM
The upper control arm on my 71 pinto squeeks loud after about 100 miles on a new cross shaft. I lubed it up on assembly but dont see anyway to lube it once together. Any ideas?

What kind of bushings are you using? I installed new poly bushings last year on my 78 and they squeek a lot compared to rubber.

I used stock rubber bushings, but is there no way to lube them on a regular basis and you can't put very much lube on initial assembly.

The stock rubber bushings are designed to operate without lubrication.  There are no intended sliding surfaces.  Be sure that the A-arm is at its normal ride height before torquing down the cross shaft end nuts, this is to avoid preloading the rubber.  As to the squeak, maybe something loosened up.

Try greasing your upper and lower ball joints. I thought my Mustang II had squeeky control arms too, greased the ball joints and it fixed the problem!
