Tranny's, C4 - C3 What are they?
« on: November 25, 2009, 07:57:32 PM »
Ok guy's. I am not to keen on tranny's but I want to learn as much as possible. I keep hearing people say "oh, it has a C4 or it has a C3" so on and so forth!

What is the C3 and the C4? What makes it this number? What Pintos had what tranny? What other tranny's and what's their number, are in Pintos?

I know it is alot of questions, and I could probably do alot of foot work, ok, finger work LOL, and find my answers, but I thought it would be nice to have it all in one thread!! Can you all help with the questions above?

Thanks
Kim

Oh, did I mention I am addicted to Pintos? LOL  ;D

I know my '72 (sadly deceased) and my on-life-support '74 have C4 trannys (automatic) not sure what a C3 is... maybe an automatic for the V6?  ???

c3 has 13 trans pan bolts while the c4 has 11.  that would be the easiest way to tell id think.  the c3 was in all pintos 75 and up along with rangers, turbo coupes, mustangs, xr4tis...etc.  it was fords "new" light duty tranny for smaller cars.  im pretty sure all 71-74 autos were a c4.  the only other auto pintos had was the c3.  after the c3, c4s were mainly used for small v8s and i think some inline 6 motors...but im not for sure on that.  ford then came out with the c5 in the early/mid 80s as, basically, a lock up version of the c4.  the c4 valve body and convertor can be installed in a c5, but youd loose the lock up.  c4 stuff and c3 stuff wont interchange..t hat i know of.  after that came the aods, a4lds...etc.
blupinto, im sending you a pm.

So a C3 and a C4 can be both a Auto.tranny and a stick? I would need to look for the bolts to tell which is which?

No, the C3 and the C4 are both 3 speed, automatic transmissions.  The C4 originally came out in 1965 to provide a 3 speed automatic in place of the Ford 2 speed auto (I think it was called a Ford-O-Matic or something like that).

At some point in the early 1970's the C3 came out.  By everything I have heard the C4 is stronger and more desirable than the C3.  So, if you have a C4 that is good.  If you are lacking one I have a C4 from my 1973 Pinto that worked fine when I pulled it.  I've got a 2000 motor too.  Right off the 101 on your secinic route back to Sacramento after Knott's this Spring!  Cheap too!

Thanks for the offer on the tranny but I have a supply of about 50 or so, so I am not looking for one! LOL I am just trying to learn what the tranny's are. So it sounds like C3 and C4s are both automatic trannys.

What is a manual tranny called?
