Updated Sep 2018 to add an active link.

I used to be really active on a couple of Mustang II sites when I had one several years ago. I thought I should go back to them because I knew there was more info there than I could remember.

I re-found the following, it gives measurements and some good info on how and what to order.
http://www.mustangiitech.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=80:moser5lugreara xles&catid=48:drivetrain&Itemid=123

Ok, this link has been dead for a while. :(
I was just exploring and found this
https://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/threads/ordering-new-axles.738531/
Post 15 has the measurements. I think someone copied it from the mustangiitech site before it went belly up again.

I hope it helps others.

Russ: Is the 8" Ford Mustang II axle the same 8" they would have used on the Pinto? I pulled one from a 1978 glass hatch that had the 2.8L engine, auto transmission, mag wheels - white with red accents. It was like the "sport package" or something. The code on this axle begins with WDY-AL, which is a 3.4 gear ratio.

I just checked the tag on my 6.75" rear end, it's WGB-U which is 3.18 gear ratio.

Chris,
It's the exact same one.
Leaf springs are different, but the housing and axles are the same II or Pinto.

Brakes (backing plates/drums/shoes/hardware/size) are the same for 6 3/4" and 8". All the same for Mustang II and Pinto. All will interchange.

I can't remember for sure but I believe the driveshaft length is different, but I could be mistaken. Been a long time.
But otherwise it is a total bolt in.
As long as we are still talking the Mustang II 8 inch rears that is. They were made for the II and the Pinto.

I swapped my '73, 6-3/4" out for a '78, 8".  When I got the Mustang II 8" I was very glad I opted for the "Drum to Drum" purchase (it was only $10 more).  I found out that though the brake diameter on the friction area is the same, the center hole for the 6-3/4" was too small to fit the 8".  So, maybe things changed at some point but in my case the 6-3/4" rear drums did not fit the 8" rear.  It would seem logical that the other way around it would work - sort of. That being the 8" drum would fit on the 6-3/4" rear, but the center hole would be too large and would rely on the sloppier lug bolts for centering. More than likely that would cause an eccentric action and pulsating brakes.  As it was I welded the 6-3/4" rear to the donor Turbo Coupe when it was hauled off.  So, I had to use one of the 6-3/4" drums with the parking brake anyway.

Regarding the drive shaft some setups work and others don't. In general I believe there is a 1/2" to 1" difference.  I was fortunate. I went from a C-4/6-3/4" rear to a T-5/8" rear and the original shaft fit perfectly.
