302 swap question
« on: January 24, 2012, 12:08:23 AM »
hi, im picking up a 1973 pinto here in a couple days, and i already have a 5.0l HO out of my 89 mustang and ive been searching around about the 302 swap and seems like everybody uses 74 and up pintos.

whats different about the 73 pinto?

and what mounts do i need? could i just pick up any v8 mustang II motor mounts? and modifications?

also, who make aftermarket headers for this swaps?

please help!

Hi. I have a 75 HB that i had everything ready to do the same swap on it as you do. Motor, tranny, etc. I changed my mind when i came on to a Turbo Coupe motor, but while i was preparing for the V8 swap, i came across a manual titled "Complete V/8 Pinto Engine Swap Manual" by a guy named Randy Young. I bought his manual on E Bay for about 10 bucks or less. Even tho i did not do the V8 swap, i was very impressed with how detailed his manual was. It even has a template for you to make motor mounts with.

As far as the year being pre 74, I dont see any issues. The issues were with a Turbo Coupe Motor and the older motor mounts on the Turbo motor. (My 75 mounts bolted right up to the Turbo motor- and the 73 and older ones wont)

The 73 will have to be clearanced at the firewall. The 2.3 body mounts will work but it will take some modifications. There is a difference in the width of the engine bay. I believe the older cars were wider. Hooker makes headers but they are super expensive. Ebay is the place to look for some of this stuff. You will need the Mustang II oil pan and pickup tube if you can get them. If not a front sump pan with the correct pickup tube will work with some modifications. I have that book that was sold on Ebay. It's ok as far as info and what to use. I sent you a pm norcalfiddy
