Ignition - getting rid of points/condensors

Is there a kit around to get rid of that on these cars?  I've heard of them for most ford/chevy V8s and stuff.  I just think its horribly inefficient and would like to see an electronic ignition in there.

I have seen them for 2.0's, not 2.3's, but that was a long time ago.

If I am not mistaken, all Pintos 75 and later are point-less (yea, i know what I said).

All 2.0 came with points, and the 74 2.3 did as well. If you want to swap out the points from a 74 you will need the box, dissy and part of the harness.

So you could *probably* take the distributor etc out of a newer 2.3, say an mid 80s mustang 2.3 or something?  I didn't know how long they ran with points.

Good call.  I did some research and I can't find kits for any ford past 74.  I would say they went to electric 75+, thanks for the info.  I'll do a little more research on how hard it would be to grab the parts off a newer 2.3 to convert.  I don't even like dealing with the points/condensors on my older sleds (I had a 75 arctic cat cheetah, and still have a 74 polaris colt.)

So, if you wanted to go with newer stuff, could you go with a new distributor like this from MSD: http://www.msdignition.com/dist_18.htm  along with one of their ignition kits?  Or is there anything else you'd need?

Why don't you just get a post 74 2.3 Pinto? You said you don't have a Pinto yet anyway. A fancy ignition won't do as much for milage as other items will (like 2.79 gears).

My experience with one of each tells me that the difference in gas mileage with a Pinto is with the transmission.   Stick to the 4-speed manual transmission.

I plan on doing a 5spd tranny out of a 2.3 stang.  I still don't want points and condensors.  I hate dealing with them.

Why not go with The PerTronix Kit. I plan on using this set up.

They offer 2 kits: IgniterI and Igniter II which is the high end version.

You can buy the Igniter I kit from JcWhintey, Or Ive seen both kits on ebay for cheaper. Yo might have to email one of the sellers and ask for the specific kit. I did and they had it.

I purchased a Petronix Kit from Eastwood and also you may need a coil to match with it and they can refer the correct one which they sell as well. The cost was approximately $80 for the kit and $20.00 (?) for the coil. I haven't fired it up yet so I don't have performance info but it was easy to install.

I just plan on using a MSD Blaster 2 coil.

But then just like you, I also havent ran it with this set up as of yet.
