Title: Comparison between D5 & D9 direct pull bellhousings
Post by: Pinto5.0 on September 05, 2012, 04:26:09 PM
I got curious about the D5 & D9 bellhousings & decided to write up a thorough comparison between them.

First some basic info on what's identical.....

They are externally nearly identical & bolt to the block the same & the T-5 bolts to either one exactly the same. Both bells are 7 7/16" deep from block to trans face.

They both take the same size clutch cable(same asPinto cable) & the cables mount in the same spot. The D5 has a metal dust cover that bolts on to the bell & covers everything. The D9 takes a rubber boot & has no provisions for the bolt on cover.

Here's a shot of the steel dust cover that fits the D5.

That's where the similarities end. The fork pivot balls are in different locations & are different heights.

This is the D9 pivot. It's 3 1/8" tall from the trans mounting face & is approximately 3/4" in from the edge of the trans. register hole.

This is the D5 pivot. It's 2 1/2" tall from the trans mounting face & it's located abot 1 3/8" in from the edge of the register hole.

I have found 3 different clutch forks that fit the D5 so far.

On the left is D4ZA-7515-B8, the middle D52A-7515-AC & the right D8BC-7515-AC

All 3 measure roughly 3 7/8" from the center of the pivot to the release bearing location. The D4 & D5 forks take the small cable ball but the D8 is sized for the larger one.

The fork on the right in this pic is a standard Mustang 5.0 fork. It fits the D9 bell perfectly & you can see the difference between the 2 styles.

A D5 length fork in a D9 bell puts the release bearing in the wrong spot.

Thumbs up!

Thank you, I searched the archives for a week & realized just how little info there was about these. I didn't even realize the D5 bell existed until I stumbled on a pair from someone who had a D9 I was after. I asked a whole lot of questions that couldn't be answered & I sure hope this helps others down the road.

BTW, I'm still clueless as to what cars these bells even came from. Supposedly the D5 was specific to '75 Mustang II's but how it ended up with a T-5 trans bolt pattern is beyond me. The D9 I'm still clueless about the origin.....

D9 came from 79-80 carbed 2.3 turbo mustangs.

D9 came from 79-80 carbed 2.3 turbo mustangs.

Now my curiosity is peaked  :o

The engine in Callisto came out of a '79 Mustang pace car with the carbed turbo nearly 20 years ago. The 4-speed behind it always felt like it had too steep of a 1st gear to go with the 2.76 rear axle but I never thought it may be the Stang tranny.

I'm gonna have to drag it out & see if I've had a D9 bellhousing sitting there all this time & didn't know it...... 8)
