can trans/motor be pulled/installed as one unit?
« on: May 02, 2016, 04:29:14 AM »
Hi,    I have a 72' Runabout with the 1.6 and FOG transmission.  I bought it with the trans already removed, I have since pulled the motor and would like to install both together if possible.  Looks too tight though.  Is this doable?  Thanks for any info.

No experience in trying both together, but having put a 2.3 in my 73 Pinto I'm inclined to say no.  Many years ago I replaced the throwout bearing in my brothers 72, 1.6.  As I recall getting the transmission in/out was not difficult.   I remember when I pulled the 2.0 to install the 2.3.  I think I had the engine out in 20 minutes.  So, I can understand why you would like to install the engine/trans as a unit, but doing in two steps isn't that difficult.

I put the 2.3 and T5 in my '72 together as a unit and the 2.0/4spd came out that way. You'll need a load leveler and an engine hoist that can go pretty high.
'72 Runabout - 2.3T, T5, MegaSquirt-II, 8", 5-lugs, big brakes.
'68 Mustang - Built roller 302, Toploader, 9", etc.
