5.0 Bellhousing
« on: December 18, 2009, 01:55:50 PM »
I've been going over the V8 swap threads and have a question. I have the Mustang II motor mounts, exhaust manifolds, and oil pan coming from a donor car. I found plenty of V8 bellhousings on Ebay. Should I use the 87-93  Mustang 5.0 T5 bellhousing, flywheel setup for the Pinto? I have a 74 with the larger engine compartment and want to avoid clearance problems.

i used the 89 bellhousing in my 71 but you need to watch some time in the 90s the went to longer input shaft and the bells are 3/4 deeper to acomidate.

I have the same setup fits but its tight. Mine came from an 89 mustang. If you plan on getting a stage 2 or 3 clutch its cheaper to build one from ebay. get a high pressure pressure plate and i bought a ceramic puck disc for about 75 bucks new.

Was there any balancing issues? I heard something about the internal vs external crank balance. Remember, I am using a late 67 289.
If this is not an issue then I could take the 1989 bell, clutch, plate and trans and bolt to my engine, Right???

you can use the 89 trans bell clutch, just be sure to use the correct flywheel i think it is 68 to 80 use external balance of 28oz and 81 later use 50oz, dont mess up it will beat the bearings out rather quickly but the the bell trans and clutch should work. I may be all jacked up on this to going by memory.

sorry CB i usually get confused when i start talking  ;D Yes the bell and trans should work and i purty sure you have a 28oz motor. The fly wheel and balancer is what you really have to watch when going from early to late.

In my case, would it just be easier to keep the bell fly, clutch, pressure, use a hydro throw out and use an adapter to install the T-5?

Sorry, but I got to ask one more time to make sure I heard right.

My engine: 1967 289 (late year production, 28 oz.)

I need to get together a 1989 Mustang's 302, T-5, bell, pressure plate, clutch, throwout bearing and clutch cable. Stir together and enjoy rumble, right?

I'm going bsck a few years, but I remember pulling a 289 from a '65 Mustang and swapping in a '69 302. We used the 289 flywheel....ba d idea....ran like a washing machine out of balance and had to get the correct 302 flywheel. Of course I was 18 at the time!!
