BOSS 302
« on: November 30, 2013, 07:29:15 PM »
Does anyone know if I can put a set of Cleveland aluminum heads on a 302? I am thinking of doing a 302 in my '77, and think it would be awesome to have a BOSS replica. I remember when I was 16 ('81), my neighbor down the street put a BOSS motor in a Pinto. It was amazing. Should have bought it then.

I'd just put the whole motor as it wouldn't be any harder.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

you have to do some serious mods to the cleveland heads to make them fit but it can be done .. i did it 30 years ago .. the cleveland runs a dry intake so there is no way for coolant to enter the heads .. you have to drill two holes in the intake side of the head and you also have to plug two holes on the block side of the head ..i would`nt do that much modding to a set of aluminum heads .. i`d just buy the boss heads to begin with ..

Ok, it was just a thought....

Will probably just do a 302 w/ a set of aluminum heads.

re: B2 heads. Keep in mind the head gaskets meant for them are no longer made.
B2 guys (like me) are now using :

Quote
The FELPRO 1021's are about as close as you can get.  None of the head gaskets manufactured today are a exact replica of the original design.  The original gaskets had a steam pocket relief above the forward cylinder above the top of the bore on the block. Some OEM ones are out there but generally a rare find any more.  Many are using the 1021 including racers and it seems none for the worse.

Above quote from the B2 site.

Then there are the valves. If they still have the old ones, then they'll need a rebuild = $$$

But using B2 heads on a lesser block would be a waste. They are meant for high RPM ie: 9k
Take a 302w block to that & there will be a big oil spill to clean up !

If you want big power, you need to make sure you do the required under carriage work to handle it.

True Boss parts would be worth their weight in gold by now. I used to have a best friend with a blue '70 Boss 302, before it was all over we had that sucker running in the tens at 130+ mph 1/4 mi. in the middle '70s. I always loved the unique sound that engine made.......... can tell one in a second. The little motor is awesome.

the one i made from scratch was a screamer but i tried to run an automatic trans behind it and never got the low speed stumble out of it ..i remember every piece that went into it ..later i switched back to 289 heads and it did ok ..

That's why the factory never put an auto in it, heads are all top end I disconnected the factory rev limiter on mine and at 7500-8000r's I could keep up with my buddy's 428CJ anything under it was a dud, with 4:56 gears it would have been a terror, it's a wonder I didn't scatter it all over the road,lol..

Yup. Motor didn't even know it was awake until at least 3500 rpm in dead stock form. We street raced the one I referred to with single 4 bbl., Mellings cam, Hooker,  and 4.56 gears and a terror then. Could touch high twelves with slicks. Later, Weiand 2X4 w/Holley 750 DP, a really big stick can't remember the spec, 6.14? rear gear + 2.78 low toploader. Motor punched +.030" to 305 inch and open chambered the head with custom piston to match and severely angle milled. Freaking car pulled so hard in low and 2, you lost the blood flow to eyes to get tunnel vision like the Millenium Falcon. Man that little engine ran good. Lakewood traction bars only with no other work done to suspension, seems like 32 or 33 inch tall 14 inch wide tires to cross finish line at around 8000 rpm.

That engine screamed to breathe, when putting headers on it we got the highest % HP improvement I've ever seen on a car, and I've been around a few........... .the motor had a very unique nasal sound, down low I always said it sounded like a child sniffling his nose, kinda like it was loading up but never did. But get it above 4000 and brother that engine went to a scream I've never forgotten. And at 6000+ pure music......... .....

It got sold and the guy driving it dropped out of the tens to bumping eleven teens and could not figure out what was wrong. Me and former owner/friend went to strip to chase it down and realized almost instantly the guy only running on 7 cylinders there. Long story short the motor had popped a rod, it bent into its' mate without breaking it to spin two as one and the piston stopped and locked in bore right at tapping the valves. He was running low elevens with a broken rod.........un believable!

Put an ATX on a Boss motor????.............. .............. ..HERESY...... ..........Nay, nay good brother, thou sinnest most foul.......... ...
