79' Pinto Hood latch cable broke
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:08:21 PM »
My cable broke today right behind the solid bar on the T handle. Is there a common cable  replacement substitute. I can't seem to find a replacement on ebay for less than $80. Any ideas ?  Thanks

Honestly I don't know.  I was even thinking a Mustang II might work.  I figure a 74 -80 Pinto would b the answer.  Anybody????:-\

The Ford parts book shows the same number for '74 & up.  D5FZ-16916-A
The Mustang II has a different number.
I would think you can find a used one from Fred Morgan or someone. If not, there are few available NOS.

If you are inventive you may be able to fix it for quite cheaply. The kicker is whether you have enough cable run to be able to remove some outer housing shell so as to get more length of inside cable to work with. I had an accident with a Focus and thanks to the good guys at Forth Worth Texas Fire Dept. had to cobble up a hood cable and also the main engine wiring harness where they cut it in multiple places to guarantee no fire at the scene. Them boys don't kid around. I had like 60 plus wires to splice as well as rewiring the entire underhood fusebox. The hood cable got severed about in the middle under battery and I cobbled up some copper tube, fuel line, hose clamps and simple cable splice from hardware store to splice the cable back together and it, as well as all the rewiring, have been running fine for like 6+ years now. Fixing the cable alone I priced at the time around $10 in parts.

I used to fix cables on motorcycles all the time too when I didn't have the money for new ones way back in the day.

Temp redneck fix: vicegrips, if it broke inside the car. :) Might have enough slack to splice the cable back together with a crimp-style ferrule (Lowe's, Home Depot), if it broke in the middle somewhere, as amc49 eludes to above.

I had an 87 Topaz that the hood-release cable broke on mid-way through the engine bay. I pulled the cable out of the sheath, made a loop that dropped right below the bumper, wrapped it in electrical tape, and pretended it was a race car for the remainder of the time I owned it. Lol. :)
