2.3l Fuel Injection to Carb Engine
« on: January 14, 2007, 10:08:55 PM »
I just bought  a 78 pinto everything is great on it even the half of the 2.3 engine that came with it lol  anyway I'm looking into buying a 88 2.3L EFI engine out of a mustang and wanted to change it over to a carb. what would i need to convert it over to carb or would it be easier just to change the car out to EFI? i know very little bout EFI my work has always been carbs.

the 2.3L is just temp, I'm building a 454w stroker motor for it

Thanks

Since it is going to be temporary, I believe it would be easiest to convert it to carb.  This assumes your Pinto came with the carb, manifolds, etc.  On the 88 long block replace the oil pan and pump pick up with the Pinto's front sump parts.  The dip stick needs to be moved to the front.  The 88 will have a boss for the front dip stick but you may have to drill it out.  The hole for the mechanical fuel pump should be in the block, just remove the cover and install the Pinto pump.  You may need the aux shaft from the Pinto for the eccentric to drive the fuel pump (not certain on this).  Then swap the long blocks out using the Pinto manifolds, carb, motor mounts, etc.  There will be a intake port mismatch, but I suspect it will still work temporarily (may have some puddling).  Depending on what front accessories you want, using the 88 serpentine belt or using the Pinto V belts will be up to you.  Have fun.

If the intake port mismatch becomes a problem, the companies below sell adapter plates to use the EFI lower manifold with a carb.  Check hood clearance.

thanks for the help. i think its going to be a great project for my wife and i to work on together. i got luck lol she likes working on older cars just as much as i do  ;D .

OH NO, NOT A CHEVY IN A FORD LOL no its a 351w stroker.im planing on building the 454 windser stroker for street use but im worried about over heating at lights. i was thinking bout using 2 electric fans for the engine. 1 on the out side of the radiator blowing in and 1 on the inside of the radiator pulling air through the radiator and on to the engine. kind worried bout clearance though. might have to cut front end right behind the headlights and extend the whole front out 3 inches. have to fab my own fenders though. this is going to  be my setup, see how u like it....1973 351w block, 454w stroker kit(all forged ofcourse), edelbrock victor jr heads, weiand stealth intake, and still trying find a good cam for it. i want about 700hp (just barely)streetable with 91 pump gas and light octane booster. might go to walmart and buy a little leaf blower for my turbo  :text_yb_lol:  well yall get back to me and let me know what u think. thanks pinto bros :yinyan:
