2.3 swap fuel pump sucking dry
« on: August 04, 2011, 03:23:09 PM »
hey there ive been building a 73 hatch with  2.3 turbo i got the car fired up she idles good . ive still have two problems, one is the the 255lph inline pump starts to zoop dry and the car dyes . im useing the stock fuel tank with  the stock hard fuel lines on the body of the car  . I have the return line plumbed to the top stock vent location .  im not sure what  is the cause for this . iv mounted the pump as low as i can with out having clearance issues. if you can tell me where to  and what is the best way to mount the pump with some pics that would help a lot . Also the fuel pressure is not manageable with the fpr that im using i have a 100 psi that is not ajustable but only down to around 80 psi . if anyone has tryed  or is using this fuel pump style and has some insite on how to get these issues straight   i could really use the help
whats up peps I own 73 runabout 2.3t swap, spd, pimp ecu, subframe connectors. Ive had this car for 10yrs and have done the work my self the car has been in my family for 30yrs. Alway looking for parts and I have a few my self too, please feel free to message me

I've had them vapor lock ... try temporally blocking the return.
I used to have a heck of a time in Colorado with their Winter blend gas.
I would have to pinch the return line to limp it out of the mountains. a bunch of local gave me the skinny on buying gas and never had the same problem.

To me it sounds like your running the tank into a vacuum which will stop fuel flow. Take the gas cap off and drive it. If it keeps going long after what would be a normal time for it to die...then you know where your issue is at. If this is the case, then you need the vent line clear and will have to do something else for a return. Now if your return line is too small you will not be able to regulate the fuel  pressure low enough to make it manageable. The small line acts like a regulator and creates a lot of back pressure since the fuel will not flow freely. Do you have a regulator that is designed for a return system or are you using a FMU or what??
