Turbo-Pinto installation
« on: October 12, 2014, 09:38:03 AM »
1. Does anyone know if a 1980 pinto c-4
w/torque converter, starter, and bellhousing will bolt up to a1983-4   T-Bird turbo-coupe 2.3L that  originally had a T-5 stick?
2. As to carberation:  which would be better,
retention of the ECU or a 600cfm Edelbrock?

1. Most likely, but wait for someone who has done it for first hand confirmation.  There could be a question of the C-4 "Pinto" version holding up.

2. There is no reason to use a carburetor in place of a properly designed EFI system like the T/C engine already has. The carb would require a far less desirable blow through or draw through configuration.  The factory EFI/Turbo system has spark control, fuel control, boost control, and offers driveability as a bonus to the performance increase.   Lastly, a 600 CFM carb is huge on a 2.3 engine.

If you are referring to using a carburetor in a normally aspirated configuration on the turbo engine - DON'T. The compression is too low.

Compression alone is no reason a carb won't work. I ran an 850 Holley DP on a 304 inch AMC with 8.5/1 compression, open chambering the heads and other chamber mods dropped the compression to at least 8/1 or maybe even lower. Car ran in the elevens 1/4 mile.

Two strokes can flow the crap out of big carbs at only 6/1 compression. Rest of the engine must be arranged to use that though.

To OP, big mistake if you think the 600 will be easier or better than all of the stock PCM controlled stuff. Injectors are by far much better on turbo engines. The setup more importantly is already dialed in, dialing in the big carb can melt holes in pistons before you even know it's happened and common on turbo engines.

The C4 can easily be made to take like 400+ hp, the mods described in the Dave Vizard 2.0 book.

Just wanted him to know if he was going normally aspirated (he didn't exactly disclose his intention) he would be better off with a "regular" 2.3 over the "turbo" version.  But, like you (and I) said the factory EFI setup is far superior.
