Support lifts for 72' Runabout
« on: January 14, 2017, 02:52:55 AM »
Does anyone know where to get the lift struts for the back hatch for a 72 pinto?  I see AutoZone lists a set for 73' and up, but not for 72'.  Is there any difference in the back hatch for those years?

Thanks!

Should be the same.  I am running foxbody mustang ones on my 73.  They were off an 89 GT I parted.  They seem to work ok.

For anyone looking for these lift supports, I did buy the part number listed by AutoZone for 73' Pinto ( SG304004), and they work fine for my 72' Runabout.  The other source that crosses to this part number is the StrongArm 4405 commonly found on eBay and other places.

I''m wondering with the changeover from the original Pinto platform to the Mustang II platform causes a lot of common parts to all years to be dropped for 71-73. Sort of an "Oh their different" and like an urban legend it gets applied to every Pinto part 71-73.

I do remember my 72 had arms that hooked to the liftgate , in had springs on the inside with a shaft sticking out to put the arms on , someone here may have a photo of it to show you what they looked like ,

Looking through some old ebay photo's, it appears 1972 might be a cross over year going from interior coil spring with lift arms to the pressured strut design.  I found photo's showing both styles for 1972, see below.  This is probably why AutoZone did not list a strut for the 1972.
