My experience says yes. 2.3 starter is slightly longer and terminal is at the end, but it will bolt up and work.

Thought someone else chimed in on this like couple of weeks ago, saying the two had different teeth count on bendix. Or I'm going crazy......... .............. ....

Maybe half way down and please excuse my acting like an idiot in part of that thread.

Look for 'jeremysdad' posts.

My post regarding tooth count was for manual vs auto. As long as you get a starter from an auto 2.3, it *might work. But you can still get the correct 2.0 starters from the parts stores, so that would be my first recommendation .

YES but the Ranger / Mustang starter will turn the motor over like it has all the spark plugs out. Really turns the motor fast.

In 30+ years of wrenching on Pintos, I'm pretty sure no partsperson ever asked manual or automatic regarding a starter. My 72 2.0 car has a late 70's 2.3 starter because that's what was on the shelf available. That car was originally a c-4. The same starter went right back in when I swapped in the 4-speed. If it goes, I'm going to the Ranger style. Got one on my 72 2.3 car and yes it spins great.

Could someone give some specifics on what Ranger starter to use?
If I have to replace it anyway,  I would like one that spins more. :-)
thanks,
Russ
