I removed my clutch cable to lubricate it, it is working ok now, but looks really old. I decided to buy a new one. That's when I discovered this is another one of those parts that you can't find anywhere. I spent a couple of hours searching online, no luck. I did find slave cylinders listed for a 1973 model, and I know for a fact that they used cables at least through 1974. I also believe I found a cable for a 1974, but is says does not fit 1973. 1973 seems to be an oddball year for parts. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you

There's a cable specialty shop that installs a new cable into the original sleeve in Portland Oregon.

Hummm... . The Pinto never used a hydraulic set up. So, the listing for a slave cylinder would be wrong. When I converted my '73, C-4 Automatic to a T-5 I used the cable from a '79-'80 Pinto. It hooked properly to the firewall and '73 clutch pedal, and fit properly to the T-5 thus I'd assume a 4 speed too. I've never heard comment that there is more than one clutch cable but others may know better. Still my bet is that they are all the same.

I salvaged a 73 sedan and the Bell housing and cable had a circlip setup for adjustment on the cable. The Bellhousing also has a cast in tab with a slot rather than the Full circumference tab with hole that is used with the Locknut style cable housing on my 72. Otherwise the housings appear identical.
Anyone else confirm? :D

After doing several hours of research online, I found the the 1974-1980 models use the same cable. I can't find much of anything about the 1971-1973 models. I don't know if 1971-1973 use the same cable, or if they are different. From looking at the later model cable, the ends look different from mine, I don't know if anything else is different or not.
1973 just seems to be an odd year. Several years ago I had a nightmare of a time finding a rebuilt steering rack for it. Apparently the PO drove it with cracked boots and no oil, and the teeth finally chewed themselves up. Now it is easy to find one.

OK, this is a post from a while back http://www.fordpinto.com/general-help/clutch-pedal-assembly/ . The two images in post #4 are mine. Ignore the black metal piece the cable is attached to. That is just to get the cable over the crossmember on a T5 swap. Does that end look like your '73? If so good. I have no idea what the '73 looks like as I went from a C4 Automatic to a T5 manual/bellcrank bell housing. I never had the stock 4 speed. The other end attaches to my '73 clutch pedal. Not my image but similar to the image in post #1.
So, that pedal end of the cable seems to be common for all years as I got the cable out of a 79-80 Pinto and it fits my 73 pedal. If your clutch end looks the same as mine then it SHOULD fit. "Should" meaning I can't say exactly, but if the ends are common then there shouldn't be any reason it wouldn't fit. The only thing I can see as a possible issue might be the cable length out of the sheath. I'm surprised others haven't said one way or the other - using the stock 4 speed.
And, yes the 73 steering rack is a one year only Pinto oddity. I'd assume with all the Mustang II parts out there that there are adaptable options.

Ponyboy,
I attached some pictures of a 1973 clutch cable that I bought new in 1995. Not much use on it. $35 and it's yours which includes delivery to Chandler AZ
