2.0 single vacuum remanufactured distributor
« on: September 15, 2013, 12:33:55 PM »
If you need a replacement distributor, Advance Auto has the best deal I've found. It's a Cardone remanufactured one, P/N 31-961. With their discount it's $49.29 with no core charge! Free shipping on $75 or more purchase based on the non discounted price of the item.

I have one on the way so can't vouch for quality but it seems to be the only original style version on the market.

Also picked up a FelPro head gasket kit.

I bought on line because there are no Advance Auto Stores in my neck of the woods.

Just a folloow-up. Got the distributor UPS 2nd day air. (free shipping). It doesn't come with a cap or rotor contrary to illustrations. The breaker plate is oriented a few degrees different than the one that was in the car. Took me a while to realize this and to get things lined up correctly. All working fine. The vacuum advance works on this one although I'm not sure I see the effect.

Guess that's a pretty good deal, I just picked up a Duraspark for $50+ $7 for core charge locally, not a Cardone though(heard Cardone was pretty good for reman?), now all I need to do is get time to do the conversion..

Cardone getting whored out like all the others ala Walmart battle plan.......... ........before   I left one of the big two, they were converting all Cardone to generic 'duralast', 'masterpro', take your pick. The quality had been dropping for a while as well. Many boxes opened to find broken part, or things missing right from the warehouse but you have no idea of how much 'we aim to please you, yes, bring back that part you broke due to your stupidity and we will happily replace it' has happened there. They will be commonly simply taking warrantied product and throwing it back in a clean box to resell it since the vendors were always waving '80% of all returns have nothing WRONG WITH THEM!!' statements in our faces anyway. Many times doing that results in missing small parts that are supposed to come with the part to make it operable. Maybe 30% of all rebuilt was bad out of the box over all lines, or stupid ridiculous. The stupidity of the average backyard mech has gotten worse not better than when I sold parts in the late '70s, and why you get so much garbage at the part store now. No sense putting quality in rebuilt if buyer is too stupid to realize it. Of course all our business clients decried what was going on too, but they could not control any of it. They got really upset when multiple special order rebuilt parts come in and all are missing something. I've had to cobble up viable parts by swiping stuff from 2-3 boxes to make one good part and warranty the rest as bad.

Cardone will be forced to subsidize their name and business to Moloch to survive a bit longer, just like so many other great names in US auto repair. They will eventually simply disappear.

Just saw your comments and they reminded me of a recent incident at my friendly O'Rielly's. I needed a Wix oil filter and they set the box on the counter while I went to look for something else. When I got back the counter was covered in fresh oil. Obviously someone had put oil in it in preperation to use it and for some reason didn't, (wrong one?), and returned it. Counter person put it on the shelf without checking it.

To add insult to injury they didn't have another one so had to drive 5 miles to another store to get it.

That sucks, you'd think they would have noticed the extra weight when they put it on the shelf?. Just a FYI, the Napa Gold is a Wix filter.

Yea I normally use the NAPA one but O'Rielly's was closer until I had to drive to another one to get the filter. Lesson learned.
