Title: 1973 Pinto wagon rear bumper
Post by: ponyboy on November 23, 2017, 06:47:02 PM
Someone bumped into the right rear corner of my car and bent the end of the bumper in to where it was touching the body. I was able to pull it out enough to tell that there is only a small scratch on the body, but there is a ripple in the bumper where it bent. Is there a likely possibility I will ever find an undamaged bumper? Where would be the best place to look? The rubber strip, bumper guards, and mounting brackets were not damaged. I've been watching eBay for a couple weeks, and did find a few Pinto bumpers, just not the one I need. It seems '73 was an oddball year, and half the parts on the car were different that year. Thanks for any ideas.

Did you search Pinto NOS on ebay?  I found a new one in the box there for my Squire wagon about three years ago.

Ask / search for a place that re-chromes stuff.
They can straighten & chrome it for you.
No need to toss due to small dents etc.

I have a couple sets for 71 - 72 cars that I'm going to have done......

If you find one at ford pinto nos it will most likely be high $$$$. Re chrome what you have.

Thanks for all the information. I did find an NOS front bumper for a '73, for $259. I'm going to wait awhile and see if I can find either a new or used undamaged rear bumper. The bumper buckled at the mount when it bent, and when I pulled it out (I used a come along and a street light pole) it is still not totally straight, and has a big bump in it by the mounting bracket. Last year I had the car repainted, and had the woodgrain replaced by a sign shop with that vinyl wrap stuff. It looked nearly perfect outside until this happened. If a good bumper doesn't show up, I will get the one I have repaired, but that won't be cheap either. If I get a good one, I would be happy to give the old one to anyone here for the cost of shipping.

I had a friend in high school that had the same exct Pinto wagon you do.  While today I find your car awesome back in 1974 the wagon/wood siding/Pinto was about as "Grandpa" as one could get - especially for a 17 year old. The ironic thing is his mother drove a two seat, AMX Javelin! Go figure.

I've learned not to throw much of anything from an old car away. Could be there is someone else with a damaged bumper on the other side and welding the two good halves together makes the cheaper fix.

One way or another I hope you find an acceptable resolve to your Bumper Bummer.
