I've had a lot of time on my ands due to summer break, and i've been saving up, so i've been thinking about engines.

pimpin_pinto

can you still get a restpectable amount of power out of the 2.3 naturally aspirated?  Mostly I've heard that they are only powerful with turbos.

pbwagon

302 or 5.0L now that is a tough choice.....or perhaps not. ;D

carbed 302, or the fuel injected 5.0 :P

Has anyone considered a 2011 up Mustang 3.7 and 6 speed?  305 HP, over 30 mpg.  There is room for the 3.5 Eco Boost for that matter, more $$$.  The 3.7 should put a Pinto solid into the 12's and still get over 30 mpg!
UPDATE:  Found an afordable 3.7 with the 6 speed manual.  Looks like the 2.0 4 speed is adios. Well, after I make more progress on the house remodel, and the 54 F100 panel (4.6 mk 8, '06 crown vic front suspension) 67 ranchero, 65 F100 SW 390 5 speed, 78 el camino, I got weak, 27 TTouring project only so far, and back to the 72 Runabout.  DD is ford edge.

Well, if you're going V8, I'd say a 306 or 347 with efi backed by a T56.  But, i think the Mustang's 3.7 (as mentioned above) would be cool...or, what about the NEW 2.3 that came in the 06-12 Ranger? My buddy had an 07 XL 2wd rcsb with the 2.3 and a 5-speed and let me tell ya, that truck would get down...i can only imagine that in a lighter Pinto.  Now, when i say that, i mean electronics, fuel injection and all swapped in...i love retrofitting newer elements into older cars and making it look factory...can you imagine? A stock looking Pinto, hopping in, firing it up and still hearing the familiar 2.3 under the hood purring like a kitten, with no drivability issues, getting 30+ mpg like its nothing and moving the Pinto like its never moved before...all while appearing stock...man, now I'm daydreaming at work again!

the wife and i have been toying with this lol

as far as stock goes the 2.0 in early sedans were fastest to me. 2.8 w/4speed 3.40gears(in either) in early sedan would be sweet.
Pinto-is short for pint-o-fun.

Being an old codger geezer with a DIY attitude and creaky joints , I'm looking for an upgrade for the 2.3L that has more power and mileage and is a basic bolt in.
I color outside the lines...
74 Squire Wagon - needs a lot of work.

should bolt right in.  maybe a little 'snip' here & there.
the only substitute for cubic inches is BOOST!!!

Anyone ever see one of these?

Seen quite a few of them, could have bought one for a $100 once but didn't have anything to put it in, lol.. Guy I know restored a classic a while back.

Those Allisons are/were somewhat popular with tractor pullers. Seems like a waste to me.

Anyway, I voted for the 5.0L and would have voted the 2.3T as a second. The right mix of stock 2.3T parts can be pushed to ~300rwhp when you really turn the screws, but beyond that it's not cheaper than upgrading a 5.0L until the 5.0L block becomes a serious liability(~500rwhp).

The 2.3T is easier to put in a Pinto, though. That's what I want to eventually put in mine.
'72 Runabout - 2.3T, T5, MegaSquirt-II, 8", 5-lugs, big brakes.
'68 Mustang - Built roller 302, Toploader, 9", etc.

I'm insane, so I'm sticking with the 2.0. :) Wish mine was a 4 speed (at least), as it does like to wind out. Overdrive would be nice, though, for the commute to work. :)

jonz2Pinto mentioned " 2.8w/4speed..." Question... will the Pinto 4 speed bolt up to a 2.8? if not, what will?
