Well, if you're going V8, I'd say a 306 or 347 with efi backed by a T56.  But, i think the Mustang's 3.7 (as mentioned above) would be cool...or, what about the NEW 2.3 that came in the 06-12 Ranger? My buddy had an 07 XL 2wd rcsb with the 2.3 and a 5-speed and let me tell ya, that truck would get down...i can only imagine that in a lighter Pinto.  Now, when i say that, i mean electronics, fuel injection and all swapped in...i love retrofitting newer elements into older cars and making it look factory...can you imagine? A stock looking Pinto, hopping in, firing it up and still hearing the familiar 2.3 under the hood purring like a kitten, with no drivability issues, getting 30+ mpg like its nothing and moving the Pinto like its never moved before...all while appearing stock...man, now I'm daydreaming at work again!

as far as stock goes the 2.0 in early sedans were fastest to me. 2.8 w/4speed 3.40gears(in either) in early sedan would be sweet.

Being an old codger geezer with a DIY attitude and creaky joints , I'm looking for an upgrade for the 2.3L that has more power and mileage and is a basic bolt in.
