Blow thru carb turbo
« on: February 03, 2015, 08:25:26 AM »
Hello was looking here on info on doing a blow thru turbo set up, older thread I was looking at had no pics or real detail on just "stuff" I'm looking into this as I dont want to do all the EFI realated mods, trying to avout the "factory Mustang/Capri stuff"  have everything to do so from fox/merkur projects. Just thinking about trying something differant. What I have been thinking about is using my 87 TC motor, removing EFI intake and realated stuff, 2 bbl intake, 350cfm Holley blow thru carb with a hat, possibly keeping the TC intercooler. Just trying to keep this simple...Any Ideas or input would be great as I'm exploring my options right now.

Thanks

can be done, check the pinto member photo gallery , one of them has what I believe you are wanting to do, a few of my early one were draw though, if you have the t-03 center you can use the seal kit from a 80 2.3 turbo, has the carbon seal to take the vacuum  if you do want to go with a draw though , but you can not use the intercooler , efi  works great with these motors , the carbs if not set up right will lean out and burn holes in the pistons, if you do start with low boost and work your way up, read the plugs every time you change anything,

helped my buddy build this one but it was a killer v8 so i figure its time to build a turbo set up- have a v6 and a 2.3 - had a v8 and now building a turbo
a lot of guys say the 2.3 efi is a way better way to go but i want to try this first and maybe end up going efi - but want to have a complete running donor car to do that swap!

Yes that is a good set up when done right, and you already got a leg up on it by using the 86 turbo block and pistons ( 8 to 1 ) , do you have the original carb for this set up, it had a external line that went to the power valve to outlet side of the turbo, it would richen the mixture under boost,  the regular pinto carb would lean out from the higher vaccum on the inlet side under certain boost conditions ,

I have one that I am saving for a future project,  can dig it up and get some numbers and photos for you this weekend, if my back yard drys out from the rain we had, these have larger jets in them also , and also do remember a few other things about this set up, the boost control diaphragm the early ones were black and the gas would get into them and they would blow out , then you would have over boost, later ones under a SB were replaced with a red silicone based diaphragm,  to find out the older one were not adjustable, the new ones were, also the ignition module had a extra pair of wires that went to a pressure switch , at around 4 or 5 psi the switch would back off the timing a few degrees ,

Hi Bobcat75,

I have the 79-80 turbo carb, intake & turbo.  The carb should be rebuildable, and i had the intake shot peened so it looks good, but the turbo is junk.  I would be willing to sell everything for a reasonable price.

there ya go , that was easy , but make sure it has the little elbow in the black circle , if it does not it is not a turbo carb,  a line goes from that elbow to the pressure side of the intake (turbo outlet side ) so under boost it will richen up the mixture some ,

Thanks guys...just got back into a Pinto or Bobcat Sport after 18 years of Fox's. Have been wanting to do turbo swap for a long time now. I currently have several differant Turbo engine option for this car. Its a 1980 Bobcat Sport...2.3 auto, A/C, PS, PB, seems to be loaded, except sunroof. Wanting to do someting "stock appearing" as I would like to keep the auto, A/c, etc...

Option #1
Try and do the set up starting this thread...TC long block, ported E6, t3/4 turbo and Ranger roller cam, replacing intake/efi stuff with carb.

#2 Stock draw thru from 80's Fox mustang, this engine is fresh rebuilt with TC pistons, Ranger cam and Crower sportsman rods, but think I will have to swap out auto for 4-speed due to kick down linkage, keeping car as if "factory" turbo install

#3 Step up and just go all out with EFI swap...

all the above will be running TC accessories/serp belt set up th help clean up engine compartment, brake and suspension up-grades, stock exterior...wit h factory Fox scope and front/rear spoilers, Pace car Recaros redone in red, again trying to keep it "factory" appearing...

How does this sound? Ideas??

Thanks again

guess you see the elbow I was talking about , so that is the right carb, one more thing you can do for more power is larger main jets, it is still kind of lean because of emissions , the numbers you see on them are flow rates for that jet, you can get some jets from Weber but they are numbered in inside diameter , not flow rate , seen years ago that some has a conversion chart for them, like I said its been years and carb info is getting very hard to find , and because of EFI, its doomed  :o

No that will not well at all, the power valve is much different, and made for a turbo, if you had the stock carb and turbo opened up side by side you would see what I mean, also the jets are much larger and the air bleeds are a different size also, the one one e-bay is not a bad price, the overhaul kit is over the half price of the carb,  then you still have stock have a carb, good luck , later blaine
