2.3 Duratec turbocharged?
« on: March 11, 2014, 10:25:14 PM »
Ok, just got another brain fart. Was looking at the 2.3 Duratec found in the Ranger and Focus. Also the Mazda 3 is turbo'ed. It is an all aluminum motor, weighing just around 210 pounds! I like that idea and it is really light!

Anyone done 1 of these ? Or any thoughts?

I wish I could afford the Ford 302 aluminum block, but thats wishful thinking!  ;D

Well, if it fits in a Cortina I guess it would fit in a Pinto, of course anything can be made to fit with some work..

You'll have to totally fabricate engine mounting on FWD ones, they have no side engine mounting ability. They mount on the front.

Ironman started to do a Pinto conversion using a Ranger Duratec but ran into a couple problems.  One was welding up a modified aluminum oil pan.  The other problem was the Ranger transmission shifter being too far forward.
http://www.fordpinto.com/your-project/duratec-pinto-conversion/msg64063/#msg64063

On the shifter location, I have since seen a few threads relocating shifters (not Duratec specific).  Scroll down a bit in each link..

Any project is a lot of work, lol, but if you think things out first and have a little creativity you'll find out it's not "that hard", even without all the trick fab tools, I sure don't have them,lol.. :D

This link is to a project thread starting on a Duratec to Pinto installation.

The link below has photos and a long thread on the SBF bellhousing to Duratec adapter.

You need to sign in to turborangersfo rums.com to see the photos.
I put this over on TurboFord.org also since you started a inquire there too.

Does anyone have access to TRF? I have tried to get ahold of "RangerGT" with no response. If you could get ahold of him ofr me I would appreciate it. I want to get his oil pan flange or see if he can make 1 for my '77. I also want to get his bell housing adapter. Thanks, Eugene 316-204-6933

My email is:

tintmaster@cox.net

for him to contact me.

Any good gear head / hot rod'r would put a straight axel under it and have it on the street in a week.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

I am not sure why I haven't got a email confirmation for resetting my password on my old account. And I haven't gotten a email confirmation on my new account I signed up for. I used to be on there years ago when I had my Ranger.

Well finally found a 2.3 CX7 core motor today. Not sure whats wrong with it. Got it to use for mock up. I need to make motor mounts, custom oil pan, custom header and intake. And then FMI with all the piping! Whew! I bought a oil pan flange kit from "RangerGT" off of TRF. Man that is 1 talented guy, and has 1 STUPID FAST Duratec turbo Ranger!!!!

Plans include getting a MSII for engine management, a bell housing adapter from "Quads for Rods" to run a C4 trans, and a 8" rearend.

So now to tear the motor apart to have just the block and head, should weigh around 80 pounds!!!

I will be listing my stock motor for sale as well.

Got the motor tore down. Left crank and pistons in. They turn so easy and smooth. I didn't find anything wrong with this engine.  It does have a forged crank!!! Will use it in a Ranger block, as rods and pistons are a little cheaper. And "GT" has already done a build like this. So 400-500HP is easily attainable!!

Will get Eagle rods and CP pistons. Still trying to find a Ranger block and a '03-'04 Focus head! The search continues….
