Title: 4spd auto in a Pinto?
Post by: crazyhorse on July 31, 2004, 05:58:55 PM
ok I'm looking for more MPG& performance. so I'm loking at using an AOD trans in my "Lil Horse".  I know the bellhousing will be bigger, but will it fit w/out mods?  I can shorten the driveshaft no probs, IF the silly thing will mount relatively easily in my car. what I need to know is how far is the mount from the bellhousing? and is the bellhousing too big to fit in the trans tunnel?

LOTS of work with very little reward. 2.3L Pintos are already geared so high that any thing but level country will cause a down shift from the tranie. And you want to add an overdrive to this!  You'll end up like my van, with a car that up-shifts / down-shifts at any and all elevation changes.   Spend your money on things that will help both power and mpg, like headers and a Ranger cam.   Play with the ignition timeing and curve.

You can get away with lower highway RPM overdrives with fuel injection. Lower speeds with a carb is ineficient and you loose a slight bit of low speed torque.
