Title: newbie update
Post by: futuraman on July 05, 2008, 10:18:23 AM
hey all, last time i posted about looking at a 80 pinto [that fell thru]. now i am looking at a 79 wagon that is owned by an older man that has kept the car nice condition with 160k unmolested. he is asking 1000. mean while ive found a 72 wagon in a local paper that has been sitting for a few years abandoned and the current owner [the one who bought the property where the car is sitting] says she has the papers to get the title and she wants 500. both cars are 4cly 4 spd with decent bodies, according to owners [i have not seen either yet, 79 is over a hundred miles away, and the 72 is close enough to look at-which i will, but the owner seemed a little off to me and its been sitting and has a title issue]. i prefer the 72 body style but the 79 is probably the better buy. sorry for the long post, but i really am serious about finding a pinto for a driver and cruise show warrior.by the way money is an issue. thanks, mike

Mike:

As you said, "By the way, money is an issue" - um, yup, isn't it always? Can't go wrong with a '79, I had a wagon back in '93. Be careful and understand that the car WILL be a money pit - I am finding that out VERY quickly - I overpaid recently for for a complete, running vehicle (1976 wagon), and since bringing home have found a rusted floor pan, hornet's nests in the cowl, brakes that just decide to stop working (pedal goes to the floor), ripped grease bellows, dry rotted bushings, cowl and heater box filled with dried leaves, cracked steering wheel and collar, crumbled instrument cluster, bent radiator support, I >think< a bent steering wheel shaft (doesn't seem to line up with the dash cluster), cracked dash cap, non-working radio, etc.

Like I said, it's a money pit. If money's already an issue before you even find one, batten the hatches....

thanks for the replies. yea ive had alot of older cars and they all need money thrown at them from time to time. I don't want to come off cheap or unrealistic, I just want to start off the best I can [with limited funds maybe 1000 or so] I prefer a good running car to a pretty car because I can handle cosmetics [just dont want a rust bucket]. like I said I prefer earlier body styles but I like them all, so if anyone has a pinto or knows of one near roanoke va, please let me know. thanks again, mike
