Title: Clutch pedal stiff ?
Post by: Late Models Best on July 03, 2008, 09:49:12 PM
Hey guys,   I got to run my 79 Wagon last week.  It has been sitting in storage for a good 3 years.   It started and ran fine but the clutch pedal seems very hard to depress.   :wow:   I think it may have been that way when I parked it too.  What could be causing this?   It may be the original clutch w/ about 79 K miles on it .  Maybe it needs a new one.  Any help would be appreciated.  I would like to start driving it again but my leg might get tired.   ???

Possibly slightly off topic....

How do you guys adjust your cables? Do you pull the tension on the cable until the pedal is all the way up and even with the brake pedal?

That is how I have mind and it deffinitly does take more effort to push the pedal down compared to the Hondas and Mazdas I've driven in the family. Not only does it take more pressure but it also springs back a lot harder.

Is this the normal feel for a 70's ford/Pinto clutch?

i think the honda/toyota cars are hydraulically actuated.  the pinto, if it has sat unused for a while may have a build up of surface corrosion on the friction disc hub splines and the input shaft to the trans may be suffering from the same fate,  the input shaft bearing retainer upon which the throw out bearing slides may also be plagued by corrosion from non use over the years.

Yes, I've heard a stiff clutch is stiff when it's old on our Pintos, however I cannot remember what the clutch pedal was like before I rebuilt the engine and the clutch though.
