Title: Faded interior panels - how to "fix"?
Post by: popbumper on July 01, 2008, 10:03:45 AM
What in general are people doing to resolve faded interior panels? Paint is an obvious choice, are there other options? Can people share their experiences with these? Thanks!

PS - mine are faded to a light grey, the Texas sun really did a number on them. My original interior color is tan.

I bought the rattle can paint for plastics, changed blue kick panels to tan. Has held up pretty good. Just be sure to follow the prep directions on the can.

I covered every plastic panel in my Rallye with high grade vinyl. That was 6 years ago and it is holding up real good.

I used Landau roof adhesive. It is used for vinyl roofs.3M makes a very good adhesive in spray cans that you can get at NAPA.

I took a can of rubberized undercoating and covered the plastic first then painted it with a good quailty paint  ,It looks factory ,The under coating takes a good day or so to dry but it sticks to the plastic really good

I went to the paint supply store this afternoon and asked "what works for interior panels"? They fixed me up with this flexible paint that comes in a number of colors, and is for plastic, vinyl, and even carpet.

This evening, I scrubbed one of my kick panels and decided to go for it. OH MAN (I'll share pics later, and the name of the product, it's late and I put it away), it is unbelievable, the color is near dead on the factory color, and it has a nice semi-gloss shine. Wow. Can't wait for the new carpet, and to do the other long panels in the back of the wagon.

Do post the brand when you get a chance. I could use something to fix up my interior a little.

Smeed:

The vinyl/carpet/plastic paint that I used is by a company called "SEM", and it is called "Color coat". The photo attached shows my interior kick panels (side by side, "after and before") with the can of material between them. I will be using this paint on all my onterior plastic panels - it dries semi-gloss like original, and looks very, very good.

If you cannot find the tem let me know, I can source it easily in Dallas.

My local automotive paint supplier (in Virginia) sells SEM products and can computer match or custom mix any color you need and even put it in an aerosol can if you like.  It is a great product - I used it to redye the vinyl landau top on my Continental Mark V and it has held up well to exterior forces as well as to the more common interior uses.  I am a great believer in SEM products and I'm sure you can get avocada if that's what you need.
