Title: driveshaft lengths
Post by: volksnut on June 30, 2008, 06:52:33 PM
I just installed the 2.3 with Pinto 4 speed trans in the daughters Mustang II....car had V6 before, well I know the shifter hole needs to be moved up a few inches, well it seems the driveshaft is too short too. The measurement I have from trans (seal flange) to rear yoke (where the u joint cup sits in) is 51 3/4"   Whats the Pinto shaft measure in at, if the same I'll look for one, I'm sure it costs more to lengthen mine?  Anyone know?

I have never done that swap but here is a little driveshaft info.

I took an 8" rear and DS from a MII (V6-C4) in a bone yard. The DS was longer than a Pinto one. When I get the chance I will dig it out an grab a measerment for you. (it will give info on what the difference will be)

I would not have one modified, they are so easy to find in the correct length. Even if they take the wrong u-joints you can get cross-over ones to make it work.

Be careful, some shops or yards measure them differently; some do weld to weld, some do 'on-center' (like me), or the way you mentioned.

My 1973 wagon, 2.0 engine, C-4 trans., 6-3/4" rear driveshaft measures 45-5/8" from the CENTER to CENTER of the U-joints.

While possibly not applicable to your situation when this shaft is used in a Pinto with a 2.3, T-5, 8" rear it works perfectly.
