Title: Saab (or other) Intercooler for Turbo Pinto?
Post by: Wittsend on June 29, 2008, 12:53:54 AM
I was spying out the intercoolers in the J-yard today.  It seems like the Saab is a likely candidate (the one I saw was about the size of the T/C, but with two right angle in/outs).  Does anyone have any info/pics?  Or, is there a better intercooler out there?  Thursday starts the July 4th 50% off sale and I can get one for $16.
Thanks, Tom

P.S. the Volvo intercooler looks HUGE! I use to have an Audi 5000 Turbo, my recollection was that this might fit as well.

Can you be a little more specific about what model Saab it was???

If you go to Turboford.org there is a bunch of info on the subject. I know of several people who have used volvo innercoolers with success. Turboford might have info on other types of innercoolers as well.

Here is a start for your web search.  The first link shows photos of a number of JY coolers.  The second link has a performance comparison of a few.  From what I have read, the Volvo cooler's plastic end tank seal to metal cooler may start leaking if you run over 20psi.    Some other options are the Isuzu NPR diesel truck cooler or the Mitsubishi Fuso box truck diesel cooler which both have welded aluminum end tanks.  If you want I could email you some photos (off the web somewhere, I forgot to save their addresses) of the last two installed in Pinto's.

Thanks Everyone,
The Saab intercooler I was finding in plenitude was the one here (Saab 900):

It seemed to fit behind the grill and before the hood latch (note my Pinto is a '73).  All the Volvo intercoolers I found were very big though they seem to rate well. Gee, I never knew there were so many.  I'll look around some more.  It seems I have two options. Put a scoop on the Pinto hood, or mount another intercooler up from.

Here's my work in progress that includes mounting a Saab FMIC on a Pinto.
