Title: New Pony in the stable
Post by: 78squirewagon on June 28, 2008, 05:01:50 PM
I just picked up another 1978 Squire wagon today for 500.oo. It has the V-6 with an automatic transmission. 41000 ACTUAL MILES!!! The floor boards are rotted out and it needs brakes but it does run ok. As soon as the guy drops it off at my house, I am getting the brakes done, giving it a tune up (it had two year old gas in it) and then I am going to drive the tires off of it (as soon as I put new ones on it). The interior is in pretty decent shap and the headliner is MINT. I am going to swap the front window felts/seals out with the ones I have on my red wagon (because these are NICE) and I migth swap the bumpers but we will see.
It's rusty in spots and may not be the best looking thing around but it will be my daily driver this Summer and I will drive my Subaru this winter in the snow.

At least I saved it from the junk yard which is where it would have headed next week.

Here are some pictures that I took. I wish I would have had my camera ready when the goat actually jumped in the back of the car or on the hood :D

Thanks

It actually took a bite of a piece that was hanging down and I was took slow with the camera  ;D

Brian, I doubt if it will be at Gus's because the wife said she will not drive it. Maybe I can get her to drive the red one while I drive the "FRESH BARN FIND"   ;D Plus I still have to get it out of Plymouth WI first

I was talking to some of my friends at McDonald's tonight and we have decided that we are going to make the new wagon into a Pinto rat rod. It's going to be a club project so to speak so this could be fun. Everyone jumped in with ideas and it will be cheap to do. On person offered to scuff it with a D-8 while another is willing to paint it satin black. we are going to keep the fake wood theme but replace the stuff that's there with veneer. Since the trim pieces are not that great, we are going to paint them red. I am keeping the stock steel wheels but I am going to paint them red. I have a set of chrome trim rings and dog dish hub caps (I was going to use on the red car) so that will look pretty cool. A few other people have ideas so this will be fun. Plus it will not cost me a lot of $$$$. it will be the first rat rod Pinto that I know of. At least in this area. If anyone else has heard or seen one, please shoot me some pictures so that I have an idea of what it might look like  ;D

Ratrods are awesome. If anyone has seen the movie "Waterworld" I think a pinto wagon ratrod would look very intimidating with that theme.

They were talking more of a 50's-60's theme with a fake surf board on the luggage rack. Just a little pin stripping and light touches. But we will see. "Waterworld might be to radical for what I picture but who knows  ;D
I am going to try and get it down to Gus's for the mini-meet and then after that, I am going to turn them loose on it. I am going to help when I can so it will be fun
For all of you purest out there, the car is in decent shape but would cost more to restore than it would be worth down the road. I am not going to destroy a rare car so relax  ;D

Anymore suggestions

The "new" Pinto wagon made it home today !!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The kid (he is only 21) dropped it off at my house this afternoon.
After dinner at Paulies I was looking at the car a little closer and now I am not so sure I want to rat rod it. Everyone needs to talk me into it before I decide to shoot some white paint and clean it up  Tell me it needs to be satin black with red trim and surf boards on the top
The back seats look new with the red, yellow and white plaid inserts. A neighbor said he would put brakes on it if I got the parts so it looks like it MIGHT be on the road before the end of the month. (August 2nd MABYBE!!!)
I will keep you all posted.
