There is a wrapped hose exiting my air cleaner housing that goes up under my drivers' side fender, and if I look at the correct angle (when the door is open), I can see a plastic tank (looks like a windshield washer reservoir) tucked up under there, that the hose attaches to. BTW, the hose is ratty (has holes), so it's not doing much of anything, I suspect.
What is the tank for?
Chris
if your car is AC and PB this is a Vacuum canister. Most of these are on the passenger side and look like coffee cans.
But if its clear with a black top it might be a relocated charcoal canister.
Most of these were mounted on the front drivers side frame rail behind the radiator but I have seen them relocated to odd spots but the dealership to make clearance for accessories

Clear with a red top, mounted under the driver's side fender, hose from it to the air filter housing. Never saw one of these before. The car does not have power brakes, and the AC looks like a dealer or aftermarket add-on.
Chris
i believe its an evaporative fuel canister....used to control the amount of vapors in the gastank. Im not sure but i believe those fumes are sent to the air intake and burned through the exhaust.
What side is the ac pump on? Passanger side factory Driver dealer
based on my 76 bobcat it would be the evaporator canaster and the vacuum canister is on the passenger side similar location.

Phil:
AC compressor unit is on the passenger side BELOW the smog pump. It looks like a dealer add on (sorry, would not know any better) because the A/C controls are two knobs (one for speed, one for min/max) - in the middle of the dash next to the vent - as opposed to being in tandem with the standard fan and heater controls. NOTE: They look "official", as in "not sloppy", and the routing for all the hoses through the firewall are tidy, which makes me believe it's a dealer add on.
Chris
It is an evap. cannister, mine is mounted in the same spot on my '76 MPG wagon,
non-AC, manual brake car.
Thanks for the validation. Why the attachment to the air cleaner housing? What would the purpose be?
Chris
The function of the Evap. canister, or charcoal canister, is to collect and temporarily store fuel vapors, from the vehicle's fuel tank and carburetor.
Later, during the normal running of the car, the system pulls the vapors out of this canister, and burns them. That's what the attachment hose is for.
Great, thanks!
Chris
