Just having bought an all original 1976 MPG wagon, I am dealing with a greatly faded interior, though the car is quite dry and rust free (Texas car).
I would like to bring back the interior to original spec if at all possible. Can you guys help me with info on the following topics?
1) Plastic panels - all the panels on the interior (kick and side) have actually turned, well, almost "gray" from bleaching. Number one - how can I find out what the original color was, and two - can the plastic be repainted, or otherwise restored in some fashion?
2) Dash cap - How does one restore a cracked dash cap?
3) Dash color - how does one determine the "code" for the proper color to repaint the dash?
4) Door/interior panel color - same as above. Do paint chips exist?
5) Carpet - Where do I go? I know of several sources, but most don't match OEM. How would I know what works best? All of my carpet is faded/stained.
I hope someone can help guide me here. Thanks!
Chris
So either I ask annoying questions, or nobody has restored their interior back to original. Certainly there are seasoned pros here who can chime in. Anyone? Please?
Chris
Did you check the tag on the door for the codes?
Maybe I am just being clueless here. The tag reads "AU" which is "Tan Corinthian Colton vinyl with high back seats". Does that indicate a paint color? I thought that referred to just the vinyl.
I was hoping there was a code for the carpet, the dash paint, the interior paint. I suppose I could eyeball everything, but being an engineer, I am really wanting to know if there are codes that can be followed. Thanks!
Chris
That does cover the interior color. I don't about the carpet. Pretty sure it covers dash. Will someone correct me if I'm wrong.
There is usually a tag attached to the carpet with the color code/name etc. on my 2 pintos it was in the same spot (76 and 80). Pull up the rear seat. underneath the rear edge of the carpet was where the tag was. John
Nice, will check it out. I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

for carpets check here

because you have a wagon they don't provide a rear section but you can get matching carpet material to make/cut your own. Also offer a good color selection to pick your own.
dash caps.... on my 73 I had a local upholstery shop recover my front seats and redo the dash pad in vinyl. All others I have done since then have gotten the dash cap sold on Ebay for less than $100 and that looks OK too...
I made a video on how the dash cap is installed here...

based on my own experience only... original cars use the same color paint on doors and dash (the metal part) and all the plastic items color match. I went to the local glass shop which also happens to be the supply house for the local body shops and they had interior, exterior paints for metal and vinyl to match the original colors if that is your desire.
also... I recently redid the interior on my 78, more info on what I did here...

Wow, thanks a lot. I have already been in touch with the carpet vendor (got it from your website ;D), and I need them to send me samples. Great info too on the dash cap, I think I will check into getting it recovered as you did.
You guys are very helpful, I hope once I get my feet on the ground I can help someone else as well.

I should update the parts vendors on my web site... just not enough time in the day. But if people are using it (who would have guessed) I should get-r-done and updated as I have collected a lot more links to different vendors.
something to consider on the dash cap... if you have it recovered as I did in vinyl you will have to remove it. Lot of work involved in that. The dash cap does look good and reason I haven't had the other 2 I did recovered and opted for the dash cap...

there doin my dash pad right now 500.00 dollars
Just dashes does not have carpet - Stock Interiors does, but the color won't match exactly. The stock carpet was made by McGee carpet, called "MEDIUM TAN"/ It was on the tag benetah the rear seats.

I found a great interior supplier in Columbus, MI. They had the original material for my Bobcat interiors and I didn't hesitate to buy from them. Your standard issue carpet shouldn't be a problem for most auto trim shops. I'm going to have my seats redone and have the guy put in a new interior at the same time. The vendor in Michigan is listed below, phone, fax, e-mail and web site. They will send samples as well, and they do take credit cards.

I just wrote these folks, they seem very knowledgeable, thanks!
