Title: Tough Break - bellhousing
Post by: Wittsend on June 13, 2008, 09:40:18 AM
My understanding is that if there was one valuable item from my 2.3 Turbo conversion it was the 1973, C-4/2.0 bellhousing. Ironically in removing parts from both cars only one thing was found broken - that very bellhousing!  :(

I'm not sure if it was cracked already as there is different coloration and some "smoothing" at the break point.  I do know that it was not one of Fords "better ideas" to use studs instead of bolts on the upper two, engine to bellhousing mounting holes!  >:(

Anyway, I have a friend who is a welder for Fed-Ex.  Is it worth calling in a favor, or is there likely to be little interest in the bellhousing being "doctored up?"

Thanks, Tom

if it is repaired completely with no cracks, than there is no reason that it is any less usable than one that wasn't cracked.  We have run bellhousings on 1200 hp+ engines in pulling trucks, and never had a problem at all.

I would think that a repaired one will be OK to run IF it were installed in a jig when it was welded.  If its not done that way there is a chance that it will not remain 'true' and could put things out of proper allinement and damage everything and put it at risk for another failure. It is for that reason that buyers (like me) would be scared off by a 'repaired' one.
