hey guys my name is Nick and I am completely new to this pinto motor buisness and i think they are awesome. picked up a jeep, a 42 ford gpw to be exact, about 2 months ago. and it has a 2000cc ohc 1971 pinto motor in it . my plans are to run this motor until i can build a 2.3 with a paxton type charger and a propane carb to put in it. i know the turbo is the way every one else is going but i want the lower rpm grunt the supercharger wil give me. first off if i was to buy headers for the 2.0 will they fit the 2.3 ,and if i get a esliger intake are they the same for the 2.0 and the 2.3. Also can some one point me in the direction of info regarding heads what are the different 2.3 heads and will they work with a 2.0. and im sure some one has already put a paxton type charger on a 2.3 but i cant find any info.????? also i intend to pull a 2.3 out a early 80s mustang wil a carurated intake bolt up to it or do i have to modify it? and minus the fuel pump boss missing is there any other external diferences and with ... say a 74 2.3? thanks for all the help guys and this the first ohc motor i have ever had and its cool
I do not claim to be an expert on 2.0's, but IIRC, there is not a whole lot that will interchange between the 2.0 and 2.3.
I know for a fact that most intakes and headers are different, (at least with the ones that I have had). I have heard however, that some aftermarket intakes can be swapped around, but I am not familiar enough with them to be of much help in that department.
If I was you, I would just go ahead and throw a 2.3 in it, (using the stepped dowels for the bellhousing) and be done with it. I know there are a lot of guys out there that prefer the 2.0, but it is easier to come by parts for 2.3's, especially if you are on a budget. (like picking up heads and blocks out of junk yards)

ok c'mon guys i NEED INFO!!!!!!! and my next question is... does any one make a drop in points eliminator kit , the msd is kinda expensive and i cant stand the dura spark... and if i am mis guided on my opinion please try to change my mind!
As for parts swapped between the 2.0 and 2.3 there are not very many. However if you want to keep the 2.0 , there is a book on how to build up the 2.0. Most of the hop-up parts are from England however...including the 2.0 DOHC Turbo.Used in the Ford Sierra Cosworth etc...Try Racer Walsh and Esslinger and be sure to id the engine.
Well, as for the ignition, there are a few ways to go about that. Mainly, yes, Pertronix makes a drop in electronic ignition unit. Basically just pull out the points plate, drop in the Pertronix pick up, set the gap and timing and your off and running. To be completely honest, I have never done one in a Pinto, but I did in my old VW Bug, and I was tickled pink with how easy it was to do and how well it worked.
As for doing a Duraspark, someone on here may know if you can get a pick up type distributor for a 2.0 that is cheaper than MSD or Mallory, perhaps a stock one? I have not messed with 2.0's too much, so that may be something someone else can answer. However, IF you can get one, there are three things you can do there.
First off, you can simply wire up the Ford box to it.
Secondly, even though I am sure this will get me flamed, but it does work and is simple and clean looking, you can hook up a GM 4 pin module. That is pretty easy and like I said, is clean looking and works well.
Last of all, you can use the pick up style distributor with an MSD box, which is what I did, and once again, looks nice and clean under the hood.
Hope this helps, and perhaps someone on here knows how to get a magnetic pickup distributor. I do not.
But, of all of those options, the Pertronix drop in unit is going to be the most cost effective, and by far the cleanest looking set up. Two wires to the distributor, and you are ready to go!
