Hi pintoers im new here [posted ad lookin 4 a car a day or 2 ago] found a local 80 sedan 2.3 auto no air 36k orig miles that looks 2 be right, interior is nice no tears at all however dash is cracked and carpet is faded. No rust in the body, paint is shiney but has cracks all over. I can buy this car for 1300 what r your thoughts? Sorry no pics Thanks, Mike
Well, it's my favorite year of Pinto....
Welcome to the site!
I would say that if the miles are right and no rust, $1300 is a good price. A dash cap and carpet can be had for under $200 total from eBay.
I Bought a 79 Runabout, 38000 miles, has cancer on the lower doors and fenders but nice interior for $1500 and feel like I paid a fair price. Some guys buy cars for far less but have a lot to spend bringing them up to 'no rust' condition.
Good luck!
Dave
thanks guys ill keep yall up 2 speed. by the way what kind of mileage can i expect from this 4cly auto combo?
My '79 daily driver gets 23, mostly highway 46 mile commute. Sounds low, but I believe the consensus is that is about all we can get out of late model automatics. I remember in 1974, the best I ever got out of my 2.3 auto/air sedan was 26 straight out highway.
I believe the early 1.6 stick is the high mileage winner. I have some brochures of late model MPG models rated at somewhere in the mid 30's, but I can hardly believe that with a 2.3, auto even worse, even with a low geared rear end. Maybe someone is getting that, hope so!

My '80 MPG Pony with a 2.3 and 4 speed, when it was new, topped out at 32 MPG at best. When it got older and a bit worn, the MPG dropped down into the high 20s. My '79 wagon with a 2.3 and automatic and is prety well worn, only got a dismal 18 MPG. Then again, I don't think that it liked being pushed down I-29 at 70 MPH, which is faster than it wanted to go. Your milage should be inbetween.
