Title: Fuel Pressure Regulators??
Post by: dave1987 on May 26, 2008, 03:24:03 AM
I have been working on converting my Pony to an electric fuel pump for the past couple of weeks now and I am having a hard time finding a bypass regulator that can be adjusted down to 3 PSI.

The reason I want a bypass regulator is to minimize back pressure on the pump in concern that it may shorten the pump's life span. I have a 5-7 PSI pump on the car right now (currently not being used) and the car runs very rich when it is in use. I also have a 1.5 - 4 PSI Facet Posi-Flo pump, but I would still like a regulator in place to stay on the economical side of things.

Is there even such a thing as a bypass regulator that can be adjusted as low as 3 PSI? I have found the Holley 1-4 PSI regulator without the bypass, and the Holley 4.5 - 9 PSI with the bypass, but nothing in between!

Heres a 3-12psi return style reg from summit racing... Abit high in price for me.

hmm. What would be the downsides of running just a regulator without a return valve? Would the back pressure really be that bad on the 1-4 PSI pump?

If the ele. pump is designed to just run a regulator it won`t be any trouble. Most low pressure pumps are designed to run just a regulator..
If your really worried about it just install a Tee fitting before the reg. and run 1 line as a return, just make it smaller the the feed line. 1/4" return line should work.

Sounds good then. I just recieved my stimulus check in the mail today, so I will be purchasing a Holley regulator in the next couple of days. I hope it works better than the mechanical pump a little, as far as MPG goes.

I don`t see how an ele. fuel pump would help MPG unless your mech. had a leak

Hmm, good point.

Going through three mechanical pumps in a 12 month period, they all may have been leaking??

dave1987 the best way I have found is forget reg. `T' off to return that's youre reg.. For float bowl carb. get youre 2-4 psi. from auto-z. I don't think they have lifetime waranty any more but I have bought 6 ea. over the year's starting at chief auto part's. Auto-z bought them out year's ago and they took on chief's lifetime warranty, so if pump goes out you use my ph# to get free new pump. Hey how's that for a deal.  Fred    :)
