Title: Original black Pintos?
Post by: gordie on May 21, 2008, 10:08:56 AM
I do not remember if Ford ever painted the Pinto's black from the factory.  I know that Ford has offered black since before the days of the model T on the complete Ford lines but I know in the early Pintos black was not offered.  I do not remember if it was available on the later models.  Does any one remember?  Black appears on all of the paint chips but I do not think it was available on the Pintos.  I remember in about 1975 I had a '71 coupe that needed some body work and I had the work done and the car repainted supposedly in the original dark rootbeer color.  The body shop did not have the original color and painted my car black.  I was mad at first but got used to it and it was a different looking Pinto in those days.

yes, black was offered... not common, and not sure what years they would have offered it.

I did have a factory black 1980 runabout I scrapped 2 winters ago.

Thanks,  I know it was not offered up thru 1974 and the only Pinto catalog that I have is for my '75 and it was not available then according to the catalog.  Does anyone have a catalog that lists black specifically for the Pinto?  I think that if it was offered we would see lots of them.  Come to think of it did they even offer white?

Your  are right,  I forgot all about that car.  They were offered in Pinto, Maverick and Mustang for a few months.  We used to see a Mustang occasionally but rarely the others and they had special red white and blue interiors as well as the stripes.  No solid white cars though if I remember correctly.

In the Pinto "Do It Yourself Manual" dated December 1970, on
the specifications page it lists black as one of 16 colors offered for
the Pinto in 1971. The code is A. I have seen a few black early cars
but it was well over 20 years ago. Definitely not a common color for a Pinto.

Thanks for all of the good input!    I guess that black and white are just scarcer colors,  especially the black.
