Hello
Has anyone used vinyl paint/Dye on there dash or door panels? Does it work well?
Which ones are good? Duplacolor? Pastikote? SEM?
Do you have to use a primer??
Please help!
Thanks
Jamie
I used SEM paint on the door panels for the 78 interior restore...
cleaned them up good and used the vinyl cleaner before paint and they turned out fantastic...
couldn't tell it was paint when finished ;D
I also used the same stuff on my arm rests while I was at it and they look good too.
Thanks Cookie,
Did you use a primer of any kind?
Jamie
nope... just the vinyl cleaner/prep
I started with light tan panels and changed to baby blue.
keep in mind the colors you are trying to change...
if trying to change dark color to anything... you need primer.
example... when I painted the black rear panels in my car to blue... I had to go back and use primer for a much better result. Without the primer the blue looked black/dark.
I have used both the Duplicolor and SEM and have found SEM to be a highly superior product... goes on better and holds up longer. I had the interior of my '02 Chrylser Sebring Limited convertible (vinyl and leather combo) professionally redyed last summer and they used SEM. Drove it from then until I traded it on a new '08 Sebring convertible five weeks ago and noticed no deterioration in the finish at all.
Four years earlier I had changed the red interior in my '83 F150 to blue using Duplacolor dye. The dash and sunvisors have held up fine but the door panels started giving me problems almost immediately. I redid them several times but continued to have problems. After seeing the results in the convertible with SEM, I redid the door panels and arm rests in the truck with SEM last year and, so far, they look great. The main thing is proper cleaning/preparation and take your time... if you try to rush it, it will show! Good luck!

very weird, i just had a lady in the paint department of my local hard were store raving about how grate the sem paint worked on her 57 chevy. she said she put it on 4 years ago and still looks grate and it was only 9$ a can i buying so tomorrow
Great info guys....Looks like SEM's in the best. Now I have to find it..HAHA.
I am using the same color Red to Red, so it shouldn't be too hard to cover. I hope they have a Red metal paint that matches as I have a vinyl/metal combo inside the car.
Thanks for all your help!
Jamie
