Title: timing the 2.3
Post by: volksnut on May 12, 2008, 07:15:02 PM
I take it the single mark on the crank pulley is the timing mark....there is only one mark on the pulley and it doesn't line up with TDC....what do you set the timing at anyways, 8 degrees BTDC? The book doesn't show to much

On all the stock Pinto2.3s I have ever had there was a pointer on the timing cover and a scale on the pulley. The later non-Pinto ones have one mark on the pulley and the scale on the timing cover.

The mark is not top center on the pulley because the scale alinement is to the side.

It sounds like you don't have a cover. I would not reccamend that for a 'driver' as it does not take a much to snap a belt. Yes, it is rare, but for those that had one go from road debris......

IIRC: The stock 2.3s were about 20BTDC, but I always backed it off because mine seemed to 'ping' too much.

it has a metal cover with the pointed pointer, the pulley one mark...this was a later motor (1987) with serp pulley/belt...it had a broken plastic cover but wanted to have it look like the older motors with metal components....

The pulleys are interchangeable so if you use a 'Pinto' one you will have the timing marks you need to set the timing.

I have one, PM me if you want it.
