I'm starting to look around for a donor tranny or possibly a whole car to mate a 5 speed to my 73 2.0 and get rid of the C4 or is it a C3(who cares, i want it gone!). I got the step dowels from Bill already, and i have clutch pedals on the way. I have a clutch cable from the 77 Mustang II that I scrapped and ASSUME?? the cable will work. NOW, what year 2.3 powered T-bird, Mustang, Ranger do I hunt for. thanx , crossy
Your auto tranny is most likely a C4 as I don't think they ever put a C3 behind a 2.0.
The cable will work DEPNDING on the bell and fork you get, year and tranny.
As per my PM, with a T-5 you will still need to deal with the upper two bell housing mount bolt holes, one way or another. The T-5 itself is different depending on what it came in from the factory so get one FROM a 2.3 whatever. IMHO: The ones from T/Cs have the best gearing: super low first gears and ODs that are reasonable for a four-banger
Stay away from the Ranger 5spds, they have a history of not being that durable and the shifter location will be under your Pinto dash.
The T-9 is another option, but same as the Ranger one (and the stock Pinto 4spd) they have a history of poor durablity.
Bill
good info- I have a good 2.3 T/C trans located from an 89 T-bird. I assume $200 or under for fair price?
i already heard the bad on the T9, but great info on the Ranger shifter problem. crossy

Ford did not put a 2.3 in the 89' T-Birds.
Bill
crossy did you get belt receptacle ? . And hey I instaled a 94 ranger eng. with the hyd. clutch 5 spd. in my daughter's 71 hatch it work's fine and that is after I pulled it out of my son's 80 F-150 . Fred. :)
fred, got receptacle, not exact but will work for safety, way better than a sharp stick in the eye, or windshield. I'm starting to feel like there are a lot of one year only things on a 73. my receptacle has a plastic sheath SEWN onto it.
the POSSIBLE donor 5 speed might say 87 or 88. owners scribble was bad so it prolly not a 9. thanx , crossy
I have had an 86 and 87 T/C T5.
You should be able to get one for $100-250 in good working order.
Let me get this straight Fred. As I was wanting to use a Ranger Mazada 5 speed. You can use that tranny in the pinto? A co-worker loves using these in his early seventies Capri's behind the German V6. I assumed that it wouldn't be much of a problem except for the hydraulic clutch setup as far as the maybe swaping over the pedal assy or whatever it needs.
Winger don't worry about clutch, you want hyd. no problem. I will show you how to fabricate my self contained master cyl. unit. It blew the guy's away at Ford. It bolt's to wheel well and youre stock cable is simply conected. I use to do aircraft design mod's so I find auto much easier. I will try to get you picture of unit it is in aircraft hangar, most of the picture's I have taken of my daughter's car look to dark, if need I will remove and get in sun light. I don't know how to instal picture's here but I am starting to beable to instal to E-mail. Later I can show you shifter set up for clearance. Fred :)

You are correct on your assumption.many parts on the 73 are 1 yr only.
will this 87 5 speed have hydraulic actuation stock?? if so is it easily switched back to cable actuation? like with a stock arm?
Also. Do I hunt down a stock 2.0 flywheel for this whole switch or will the 2.3 unit work??.
I just picked up some of the small things that i might have forgotten when time comes. like flywheel bolts and pilot bushing., thanx , crossy
