Title: Emblem question…
Post by: Ponygal on April 28, 2008, 09:48:31 PM
I have been wondering... has anyone figured out how to remove the front & rear Ford and Pinto pony emblems without resorting to cutting them off the car? I have looked and can't see any viable means to unclip these things... I mean for those of you who have had your cars painted, did they cut the pins off and just tape the new emblems back on with 3M?

Thanks!!  ???

Take a butter knife, or thin screw driver, and carefully work loose the emblems. They will sloly come out, but take your time & be patient. They are just pot metal and will break the tabs off if you go too quickly. Also work a little bit on each side at a time.

r4pinto is right but cover the knife with masking tape to protect the paint/metal and it does require patience. I use plastic putty spatulas.

ok I follow...do the new ones have clips that pop into the holes, or are they screw ends?

They are all the same as I can tell from what I have seen, newer vs. older. Have posts and there is a insert you put in the hole on the body and then slide the emblem in when you want to re-attach. That's how the factory did it. You'll see when you get them out. I should note here though I haven't removed the FORD letters and only assume they are the same as the Pinto emblem....

Yup, the letters are the same way. Just gotta be careful when removing them so the tabs don't break off.

Yes, they are all held in the same way.  There are little inserts in the body (i think they are called tube nuts??) that hold the pegs in place by friction.  The nuts are typically installed before painting, and the emblems afterward.  Most well stocked auto body shops should have these, or at least have a source for them if any get damaged or are missing.  Good luck with your pony!

I dont want to hijack the thread, but while we are talking about emblems... is there any easy way to repaint these?

I don't either but Ponygal's question was answered/received and this is the next question one would ask so....

Here's what I do for the red/white/blue insert on the early emblem

1) I remove it carefully from the emblem (I have painted them w/o removing... ARG! )

2) next I use wide masking tape and stick em' to the sticky side. in pic 2 you can see I make a little paddle so I can hold and paint but you can just tape it to a box or cardboard.

3) start with cleanup and primer, maybe sand them a bit before the primer

4) then paint it all white

5) then tape it off to add the blue or red in whatever order you want

*** make sure paint is dry before you tape it off or you will have to start over

6) I suggest a clear coat after the colors are done...

7) I just used a little clear silicone to glue them back in...

That's what I do for the insert and looks great...

As for the rest of the emblem.... I would guess clean it up good, sand it, prime it and paint.

I'm not sure how well paint would stick to the chrome though...

Chrome spray paint makes the wmblem look better. On my first Pinto I kept the old, pitted emblem just because I liked it, but it was too nasty to put on a car. Anyways, I got bored one day & wanted to personalize my work area with some emblems for cars I have, so I sprayed the old Pinto emblem up in Chrome spray paint. It's not perfect, but it looks better than it did, and gives my car repair book shelf some Pinto class. I can take a pic & post it if you like.

Those look like they came out really well. I was thinking about some insert that you glue into the P, it would probably be easier to paint but it probably wouldnt stay stuck in very well. Ill have to try that, buying NOS emblems off of ebay for 100+ is too expensive for me.

Edit* After re-reading the post and seeing the finished product, did you paint the stripes on masking tape stick them in the center and then put some clear coat on top of it? The sides look way too clean to have painted straight onto the middle.

I just painted the insert and stuck it in once finished. the emblems are all natural, no paint or clear.

Oh this is all great stuff too!! I'm glad you guys brought it up because I've been eyeing the Pinto emblem on the back of the car and have been thinking about what to do about it... Although I believe mine does not have the multi-coloured insert, it really needs some lovin' - or replacin'.

I repainted one by hand once - not fun.

Thanks for the tips, and keep 'em comin!

I'll get a pic of the one I spray painted with chrome spray, so you can see the result of it.

As promised, here's the pic of the emblem that was all nasty & pitted when I pulled it off the 78 I used to have.

I think only 74 and older do...

I keep my eye open on Ebay and if I can get em' for $5 each including the shipping I get extras. rare to get them for this price, they usually sell for more.

I need one more for the 78 and all I'm all set, I plan on installing the ones on the front fenders like my 73 and one for the rear... come to think of it... I have the third one once it get's returned with my rear spoiler  ;)

BTW... since you are in Canada you could paint yours red and white and red and be one of a kind  ;D

smeed, if you have a 73 I would expect it to  ???  I could be wrong but I thought 74 and older had the insert.

I looked a little more closely and I DO have the inserts. The one totally colorless emblem I was thinking about must not. By the looks of it the emblem became unglued and fell out. I wasnt looking close enough to see the insert before.
