Title: Clutch pedals from MustangII in Pinto??
Post by: crossy on April 28, 2008, 08:43:40 PM
I just bought an engine-less  MustangII parts car with 8inch 4 lug. All i need to know is will the clutch pedals from that 77 stang fit in the Pinto.  I SUPPOSEDLY found an 88 2.3 5speed tranny for $125. so i should be on my way towards the swap over.  thanx , crossy

You didn't state what year Pinto. I can tell you that if it is a 71-73 the answer is, NO.  There is also an issue with booster brakes having different pedals even in the 74 and up cars.  I just went through this, so that's how I know.
I bought 79 model pedal for my 73. They didn't fit. Fred was willing to swap as we each had what the other needed. But even there he needed booster pedal which thankfully was what I had.

YIKES!!!! i have a 73. the MustangII is a 77. I still wonder though , for selling reasons, if the pedals do fit any year Pinto. i want to get rid of the MustangII ASAP so i am going to gut the nice  interior, including gauges, the front rack, the rear housing and then get rid of it.
so anyway i need 71-73 pedals only?

I assume you are converting from an Auto to a Manual?  If so, yes, you do need 71-73 pedals.  That's what I am doing (and throwing in the Turbo 2.3 also).

When I first got my Pinto I assumed a PINTO, is a Pinto, is a pinto.  Now I'm seeming to find that a 71-73 was a Pinto and a 74 and up is a variant of a Mustang II.

Has anyone ever documented the Pinto in a book?  Back in 1994 there was a guy who wrote a book for the approximately 2,500-3,000 Sunbeam Tiger owners out there. He had 1,000 copies printed and then his publisher went under and they destroyed all the printing plates.  At first he had a hard time selling the book for $50.  I haven't seen one on Ebay in well over a year and that copy sold for over $1,500!!! I'm glad I got mine for $310.

Anyway, it that an incentive..., I hope so.

good anolgy

Anyway, it that an incentive..., I hope so. so you bought a Tiger for $310, LOL  just kidding. you do have one though?
are those mags on your pinto avatar 4 lug or 5 lug. if they are 4 lug what are they? libra's?

thanx, the MustangII i am getting was a factory v-8 car, but i have no idea what is left under the hood , but i would imagine that nearly EVERYTHING is differnt for a V-8 car much like a tiger vs. Alpine?  so maybe i'll get  some sellable parts from it. i know i had to pay more for it than i thought it was worth!  thanx for the help. i put a WANT AD in the wanted  section. . I'm sure in some remote boneyard ther are still plenty of these cars around. crossy

Those are four lug wheels.  I'm going Turbo 2.3 - when I find the rearend.  I was going to wait on wheels until after I found out the 8" ( the one I eventually find) has 3.00 or 3.40 gears.  But, I took a chance on these from a self serve yard. They have Toyo 225-60-15" tires with about 2/3rds of the tread left. BUT, unfortunately they have flat spots and neither over inflating them or running them with 8 Lb's of air will remove them.  :(  They are 15" wheels made by ???.   A free spending bachelor friend of mine refered to them as "cheap Chinese" wheels.  >:(

The yard price is generally $32 per wheel (less tire). Tires add an additional $10 plus there is $10 core charge. So, basically they should have been $52 each.  Another local yard was having a 50% off sale. I guess to compete the guy said $30 each - NO core. So, I jumped on them.   I frequent Self serve yards a LOT. It is a VERY rare find to get all  four matching wheels - at least from the same car. Unless you are getting factory wheels it is basically a lost cause.

Yes, I do have a REAL Sunbeam Tiger - the 101st one made. But ahh..., no, the book was $310, the car was $3,500 (for DMV purposes). But, I HAD to buy the extra front clip, the removable hard top and $800 of new parts ($5,100 total) to close the deal.  ;)  You can read about it at:

There is a second part that the guy hasn't been able to post (he is rather sick). I'm 8 years into now and still only about half way. Maybe this summer???

For the record (not that you were implying anything wrong), Tiger owners can be very picky about their relationship to an Alpine.  Tigers have very specific changes engineered by Shelby and made by Jensen bodyworks.  The Tiger community fights tenaciously when people try and clone an Alpine into a Tiger.  They have an authentication process to certify real Tigers. Thankfully I passed.

All the best with getting the most out of the Mustang II.
